I Knew Him
by Abigail De Niverville
Part 1 of the What We May Be series
In his last year in high school, Julian is determined to make it through without anyone discovering he isn't straight. All he has to do his keep his head down, focus on his studies and basketball, and then, he can finally come out as bisexual in university. To most of the world, at least. When he's encouraged to audition for the school's production of Hamlet, Julian fears that veering off course will lead to assumptions he's not ready to face. Despite that, he can't help but feel a connection to this play and its title character. Like Hamlet, Julian's father haunts him like a ghost, his ex-girlfriend is refusing to let him go, and he's overthinking everything. The part is practically made for him. The audition takes Julian on an entirely different path. He's cast as Hamlet, and the boy playing Horatio is unlike anyone Julian has met before. Mysterious and flirtatious, Sky draws Julian in, despite his fears and reservations. As the two grow closer, Julian begins to let out the secrets he's never told. But what will he do if Sky feels the same way? This second edition is a rewritten version of the original story, which was first published in 2019. Abigail de Niverville is a Moncton-born composer and author living in Toronto, Ontario. In 2017, she graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master's of Composition. Her experiences as a musician and amateur theatre performer often influence her creative works in all mediums. Two stories, two heroes. One incredible year.
