Two Harbors Mystery

When Deidre Johnson fills in for Silver Bay's only police officer for six weeks, she doesn't anticipate facing anything of consequence. She is so wrong. She discovers the frozen body of a Cree Indian girl within the city limits, and in the process of her investigation uncovers a sex-trafficking ring involving native women being transported from Canada and sold in the Duluth Harbor. She is torn between the normalcy she sees around her and the long-kept secret river of young girls that flows through Two Harbors to Duluth. "SEX TRAFFICKING during hunting season?" the question on the billboard erected outside Two Harbors asked. "The sign is intended to raise awareness of sex trafficking to the hundreds of deer hunters traveling through the country over the next several weeks. Deidre experiences what all parents dread: the disappearance of one of her children. A number of suspects emerge, including a convicted sex offender, an out-of-place vagabond, a rapist, and even a wife abuser. One by one, the usual suspects are crossed off the list of those who might be responsible, until Deidre receives a call from the Minneapolis police. Her child is in custody, being held for her own safety, and will be released into Deidre's custody as soon as arrangements are made. The girl in custody possesses her daughter's purse, ID, and debit card. However, she has changed almost to the point of being unrecognizable. Deidre's family is rocked by what is happening, and struggle with coping so they can go on with life.
