Unfortunately, there is a plot afoot to remove the head of a wealthy family. This and other events take over and 'The Toff' finds himself once again on the investigative trail. It starts with a member of his team being found stabbed and a pretty girl flees with 'The Toff' in hot pursuit. She is then spirited away after a somewhat unusual conversation with her pursuer; another young woman is murdered in London and bullets are fired at a man from a speeding car. Blackmail is afoot and events all seem to revolve around two young ladies who appear to look completely alike.

It's a time of shortage and rationing. The Honourable Richard Rollison (aka 'The Toff') is in the army, but gets permission to visit his aunt, Lady Matilda Wirrington, who is supposedly on her death bed. Had she died, things would have been different, but as it was a recovery led from one thing to the other and 'The Toff' found himself involved in an investigation of the black market – profiteering by dishonest 'businessmen' in order to earn huge amounts of money out of people's needs in times of inadequate supply. This, though, went beyond that and wholesale murder raised its ugly head as both 'The Toff' and Scotland Yard battle it out with those involved.

Part 10 of the Toff series
The Honourable Richard Rollison (aka 'The Toff') is visiting Easton Hall, a pleasant and quiet country house that has been converted to a hotel. It is said to be more suited to the retired looking for rest than excitement. However, on this occasion it does not live up to its reputation. A man is found dead in the swimming pool, and a little later, The Toff's friend Teddy Merchant disappears. It is then left to him to solve what turns out to be a multi-layered mystery.

However, there were many others who might seek revenge. It is a case of too many killers who might 'spoil the murder', but if The Toff is the next victim …?

Sheila has an exaggerated view of the Richard Rollison's (aka 'The Toff') influence with Scotland Yard. Her friend Danny Bond had been arrested for the 'Chelsea Robbery', but she proclaims his innocence. When Rollison meets Danny he is both hostile and states he doesn't want anything to do with Sheila. Thus begins a mystery which inevitable sees Rollison drawn in and put in danger – but this time from a very unusual source.

The Honourable Richard Rollison (aka 'The Toff') received what he thought to be a letter, addressed simply to 'The Toff, London W1.' Remarkable in itself in reaching him, inside the envelope there was nothing more than a photograph of a beautiful, but unidentified, woman. In fact, the previous evening the woman herself had attended a society ball, looking somewhat pale but dressed immaculately in black satin and mink. No one knew who she was and she said she had lost her memory. Then, within days, the mystery deepened and The Toff was pitched against her cunning, with murder as the backdrop, whilst his own heart and feelings were both getting in the way of a solution and putting more lives in danger.

However, there are rumours that it was in fact already being manufactured in America. Drayton then vanishes and his girlfriend, Susan Lancaster, seeks the aid of 'The Toff', demanding a quick result, but then ceases to co-operate as she becomes more and more under the influence of the dubious Colonel Horniman. Just where does this leave 'The Toff' and what danger lies in him pursuing the case?

The Toff (the 'Honourable Richard Rollison') is in disguise as a helper at a holiday camp. He has been hired to pose undercover in order to investigate the mysterious disappearance of three male entertainers, or 'Red Coats' as they are known within the camp. He is assisted by the beautiful Liz Cherrell, another employee, who also features on various advertising posters being used by the camp. The mystery deepens as hidden money is found and there is plenty of action as fights break out and then murder. The Toff finds himself embroiled in a much bigger plot than anyone imagined, leading to a fitting climax at an airfield away from the camp.

Upon doing so, little does he realize the danger involved, and that there is much more at stake – including murder!
