Nostalgia Road: The Sixties

Summer 1963: Elvis reigned, The Beach Boys sang of fun in the sun and drive-in movies ruled. 13-year-old Jo Thompson travels from Brooklyn to spend the summer with her cousins on a farm in Minnesota. Riding horses, pulling pranks, and getting her first kiss makes it a time to treasure and remember. Summer 1965: A president is dead, Civil-Rights movements are violent and the war in Vietnam has escalated. Her parents have been killed and when she returns to the farm, things have changed here too. A cousin is in serious trouble and the boy she liked has a girlfriend. Jo tries to cope, but her emotions are scattered. She has some very adult decisions to make that will define the woman she will become.

1967: Peace and Love, Flower-Power, Feelin' Groovy Mary Anne Wade is stuck in Middletown, Minnesota where the only thing that ever changes is the seasons. She Kong's to be in San Francisco, where it's happening. Protesting war, fostering good-will. No rules, only freedom. When she learns of the human Be-In at Golden Gate Park, she decides to run away. She is quickly welcomed by hippies to share their pad...but the Haight-Ashbury scene isn't what she'd dreamed it would be. Her savings are quickly borrowed by roommates who want to stay high.flower children who proclaim "Turn on, tune in, drop out". She soon finds herself wandering the streets and missing home... a home she should not have left and a boy she should have given a chance.

1968: Civil Rights riots, assassinations, a war in Vietnam. And yet, in Middletown, Minnesota, life flows smoothly on, sheltered from the storms that rage across the nation. Wendy Wade loves her idyllic life, and when Kevin O'Keefe, an Irish exchange student she'd met the year before, returns, her life is complete. But darkness creeps in even to good places. When Wendy befriends a new student with a troubled past, he decides she's the only person who understands him and he'll do anything to make her his own. Anything.
