Part 117 of the Nightmare Magazine series
NIGHTMARE is a digital horror and dark fantasy magazine. In NIGHTMARE's pages, you will find all kinds of horror fiction, from zombie stories and haunted house tales, to visceral psychological horror. Welcome to issue 117 of NIGHTMARE! The last few summers here in Oregon have been pretty lousy. We've had wildfires, riots, threats against our governor's life, and of course, a nightmarish heat dome that killed seventy people here in Portland. For those of us who once enjoyed summer for outdoor adventures, berry-picking, and Vitamin D production, summer has been transformed into a horror villain-something to be dreaded like a monster with a ninety-day lifespan. It seems appropriate, then, that this month's theme is monsters. Not just any kind of monsters, but Unexpected Monsters. Each of our offerings in this issue features a villain or antagonistic force that is a little . . . odd. Alex Saint-Widow has written a post-apocalyptic short story from called "The Last of the Juggalos" which includes a rapping carny set on tormenting the narrator. In his story "Dr. Wasp and Hornet Holmes," Lavie Tidhar has moved 221 B Baker Street into a wasp's nest, where biology has created an unpleasant antagonist for the world's foremost consulting detective. Even our Horror Lab micro-pieces have gotten in on the action-they're both about re-envisioning what makes a monster. Isabel Canas's new flash story ("There Are No Monsters on Rancho Buenavista") reframes a classic Mexican folktale, and Maria Zoccola's poem "warming" is about the nasty creatures currently threatening the future of our planet (and making our summers so miserable). The monsters don't even stop in our nonfiction offerings! Adam-Troy Castro returns to review a novel about filming Frankenstein's monster, and Daniel David Froid discusses devils in his essay for The H Word. Luckily, we also have spotlight interviews with our fiction writers, who are most decidedly not monsters, not even unexpected ones.
Nightmare Magazine, Issue 119 (August 2022)
Part 119 of the Nightmare Magazine series
NIGHTMARE is a digital horror and dark fantasy magazine. In NIGHTMARE's pages, you will find all kinds of horror fiction, from zombie stories and haunted house tales, to visceral psychological horror. Welcome to issue 119 of NIGHTMARE! Our first story in this month's issue is "Every Atom Belonging to Me as Good Belongs to You," by Endria Isa Richardson. (Fans of Walt Whitman will recognize the title as a quote from "Song of Myself.") It's a terrifying story about complications wrought by climate change, but it's also a touching exploration of the meaning of family. Just as importantly, it's a story about No Easy Answers-the theme of this month's issue. Adam-Troy Castro returns to our pages with a blast of body horror in his new short, "The Arm Ouroboros." Mel Kassel brings us a flash story about pettiness and ghosts: "Skitterdead." And in his poem "Around the Corners," Jarod K. Anderson explores the labyrinth of life with depression. To lighten up the mood, horror scholar Melanie R. Anderson delves into the world of fungi in her essay for The H Word column. Our staff writers interview the authors of our short fiction, and Gordon B. White returns with an exciting long-form interview with rising star Cynthia Pelayo.
Nightmare Magazine, Issue 120 (September 2022)
Part 120 of the Nightmare Magazine series
NIGHTMARE is a digital horror and dark fantasy magazine. In NIGHTMARE's pages, you will find all kinds of horror fiction, from zombie stories and haunted house tales, to visceral psychological horror. Welcome to issue 120 of NIGHTMARE! This issue is devoted to the feeling of discovering a slug in one's bed, or stepping barefooted on a small tarantula, or emptying the cereal box only to discover a pantry moth larva creeping over the last bran flake. It's the "Unpleasant Discoveries" issue, and every story has something nasty in store for you. Take Clara Madrigano's lovely "The Gold Coin." You'd think finding a gold coin on the floor of your best friend's house would be a real treat, wouldn't you? Luckily for us, this story finds a way to make it awful. Kiera Lesley's epistolary story "Concerning the Upstairs Bathroom" strips the joy out of a new home purchase, and our flash piece, "A Girl of Nails and Teeth," by Hannah Yang, makes parenting particularly unpleasant. I won't go into detail about how a trip to the lake can be spoiled, but the beautiful language of Corey Niles's poem "much to be mourned" can't obscure an extremely gross and melancholy experience. If you're ready to be horrified, revolted, and generally miserable, our writers have you covered. But our nonfiction team is a bit cheerier. Adam-Troy Castro has shared an excellent film and a good book for you to enjoy, and our author spotlight team has explored the more human motives of our short fiction authors. Author and screenwriter Brian McAuley has also tapped into the nicer side of life in his essay for The H Word column, which discusses the way we horror fans love to share our favorite works.
Nightmare Magazine, Issue 121 (October 2022)
Part 121 of the Nightmare Magazine series
NIGHTMARE is a digital horror and dark fantasy magazine. In NIGHTMARE's pages, you will find all kinds of horror fiction, from zombie stories and haunted house tales, to visceral psychological horror.Welcome to issue 121 of NIGHTMARE! One of the hardest things about writing horror is that everyone is frightened of very different things. For one person, the sight of a spider will send them running screaming, while someone else will launch into a long discussion of the environmental benefits of arachnids. Clowns terrify some, while others enjoy their fanciful makeup and oversized shoes. We all feel fear, but we each have our own triggers and responses to it. The job of a horror writer is to so deeply immerse the reader in the story that the reader fully understands the responses and fears of the characters. The stories and poetry in this issue are about those personal fears and responses. The disagreeable and frightening things inside this issue might not trouble you, but they have deep meaning for the narrators. We start with a new short story from A.C. Wise: "Sharp Things, Killing Things." If you grew up in a small town, you will understand the narrators of this story, but even if you didn't, you will understand their fear and despair. In "The Ghost Eaters," Spencer Ellsworth crafts a tale from the perspective of a dog so good, they've kept working long after death. It would be adorable if it weren't for the things that come after ghosts-even the good ones. In the Horror Lab, Carlie St. George has a flash story ("Tiny Little Wounds") about exorcism and self-mutilation. Okwudili Nebeolisa is our poet this month, and he's also tackling the subject of exorcism in his very unsettling poem "Ritual." Our H Word column features an essay by Raja Abu Kasm about the way fictional lycanthropes have helped him live with bipolar disorder. Terence Taylor has reviewed some intriguing new novels, and of course, our spotlight interviewing team sat down with our short fiction writers for an insightful couple of mini interviews.

Mari Ness brings us a sadder story of life indoors in her unsettling tale "Wallers." Our Horror Lab originals include "Three Symptoms of a Disaster," a poem of grief and catastrophe from Angela Liu. Chris DiLeo shares his unsettling experiences with the death of loved ones in his micro personal essay "Still Breathing." As for our nonfiction, Adam-Troy Castro recommends a book and a movie to enjoy while you're staying close to the fireplace, while Eric Raglin talks about heavy metal that scares in his "The H Word" essay. And of course we have author spotlight interviews with our short fiction writers to help you see what makes them tick. Plus, our ebook readers will also enjoy an excerpt from Erika T. Wurth's novel, White Horse.
