The Locket
A Novel
by Richard Paul Evans
read by William Dufris
Part 1 of the Locket Trilogy series
The Locket marks the beginning of an entirely new series of audiobooks from Richard Paul Evans, the bestselling author of the Christmas Box collection. With this beautiful novel we learn that we are all given second chances, but that sometimes they are best given to someone else.
My Dearest Michael,
I would so rather say these things to your face, but, as we both know, life doesn't often take requests...first, I do not know yet the outcome of the trial. I cannot know if you are reading this in a cage. I have faith that you will be free so I shall write this letter as such and not take counsel from my fears.
In the top drawer of my armoire is a velvet pouch containing two heirlooms. The first is my locket. I would like you to return it to Betheltown for me -- to lay it by the hearth of the fireplace where I left my love so many years ago. I am certain that the roads will be grown over; but you will know the place.
Go well, my dear friend,
Esther
After the death of his mother, Michael Keddington finds employment at the Arcadia nursing home, where he befriends Esther, a reclusive but beautiful elderly woman who lives in mourning for her youth and lost love. "Do you suppose life gives us second chances?" Esther asks Michael one day. "I don't know. But we'd probably just make the same mistake over again," he concludes. Michael faces his own challenges when he loses his greatest love, Faye. When Michael is falsely accused of abusing one of the Arcadia's residents, he learns important lessons about faith and forgiveness from Esther, and her gift to him of a locket, once symbolic of one person's missed opportunities, becomes another's second chance.

The Looking Glass
by Richard Paul Evans
read by Richard Thomas
Part 2 of the Locket Trilogy series
When I started to write The Looking Glass, I intended to create a story about the healing power of hope and love. But as this story developed, a message began to emerge that I had not foreseen, a message about the distorted mirror in which we view ourselves, binding ourselves with shackles of self-doubt and fear. The Looking Glass is aptly named, for it is about seeing the reality of ourselves: to see a true reflection of who we are. It is the story of Hunter Bell, a Presbyterian minister turned gambler, and the founder of a gold camp named Bethel. (Which you may remember was Esther's hometown in The Locket.) He is running from the bitter memories of his past, his ministry, and ultimately, from his God. Venturing into a blizzard to chase away wolves drawn close to his cabin by hunger, Hunter finds a beautiful young woman in the snow, wounded by the wolves and half dead with the cold. Her name is Quaye McGandley, and she is an Irish woman sold into marital slavery to a brutal husband who then brought her to America against her will. As Hunter nurses her back to health, he finds that his tender ministrations to Quaye have opened his heart to his greatest fear -- that he might love again. It is my hope that you, and those with whom you share my audiobook, might through its message better see the divinity within yourself and the reality of who you are worthy of love, gentleness, and grace.

The Carousel
by Richard Paul Evans
read by Michael Gross
Part 3 of the Locket Trilogy series
This is the love story of Michael Keddington and Faye Murrow, a love story that takes place not in seclusion but in the real world, with the challenges that all lovers must face. No relationship is an island: There are threads that bind us all and pull at our lives -- the demands of family, of friends, of work, and social obligation. And there are times that the pull of those threads becomes greater than the strength of the relationship. In these times, no matter how much two people love each other, a relationship must grow strong or be torn apart. The Carousel is about what happens when life doesn't turn out the way that we planned. Beyond a love story, it is about faith, loyalty, and sacrifice. My hope is that you, and those with whom you share this book, might find the message of this story meaningful and applicable to your own life. And that in some way you might feel changed. Sincerely, Richard Paul Evans
