American Whoreson – The Builder
by Robert H. Cherny
Part 2 of the Whoreson series
Traveling east after witnessing the aftermath of the Massacre at Wounded Knee, the young man, who had seen more death in his short life than most people encounter in their entire lives, sought to rebuild the ruins of his life. His father had abandoned his mother, who had turned to prostitution to survive. She was shot when he was twelve, leaving him alone. Having learned to read at a very young age, his intelligence and attention to detail took him places typically reserved for his elders. The young man rode the train east, determined to leave the past behind. However, before he even reached his first station, where he would change trains, his circumstances shifted. This could have been just another train ride in a lifetime of journeys, but it was not. This single trip through the snow-covered American Upper Midwest changed the trajectory of his life from that point forward. The young man advanced in stages, moving from one situation to the next, occasionally staying just a step ahead of the law, until he arrived in Florida to tackle a project so large that multiple predecessors had failed. What sort of man would undertake a project of this size, one that would cause as much harm as this one would, and see it through to the end? Writing has always gotten me in trouble. Still does.I have been a fan of science and speculative fiction since I found it in the young people's section of the library. In grade school, I devoured works by Heinlein, Norton, Asimov, and Huxley among others. By the time I had finished high school, I had read every science fiction book in the town's library. When I was in high school I wrote short stories instead of paying attention in math class. This did not help my math grade and would have serious consequences a few years later. In college, I could be counted on for the divergent opinion. This was after my failed math forced a complete redirection of my life plan. A disastrous Freshman year at Brandeis University, forced a reevaluation of reading materials. Switching majors to theater brought exposure to Shaw, Strindberg, Ibsen, Stoppard, Pinter, Shakespeare, and a host of young would-be playwrights. As a technical theater major, I found that the quantity of material to which I was exposed often surpassed the quality. Too busy to do any writing of his own, I devoted his time to supporting the efforts of others. The Vietnam War brought a tour of duty in South Carolina and the opportunity to begin graduate work at the University of South Carolina. While in the Air Force, my anti-war sentiments did not become an issue, because I kept them secret. I did no writing except for my graduate school classes which I took while still in service. Even here, I was ever the contrarian, unwilling or unable to go where the others went. Fortunately, as a design major, my writing was of less concern than my draftsmanship. The war ended and with less than a month to go on my MA, and no job opportunities in sight, I left school lacking only my thesis and took a paying job at Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus World in Haines City Florida Master's degrees in the theater were not worth much in the aftermath of the Vietnam War.Fortunately, through a series of unlikely coincidences, I landed a job as technical director of the then brand new Tupperware Convention Center. At the time, it was the only full-time convention center in Central Florida. I would stay there for twenty years earning an MBA along the way although my work schedule left little time for either reading or writing except for articles in technical journals. My sudden departure from Tupperware provided the time to return to reading and writing...

American Whoreson
by Robert H. Cherny
Part of the Whoreson series
American Whoreson is the first of two books. This book is historical fiction placing fictional characters in the midst of actual, documented, historical events. It focuses on the life of the son of a whore. He is White, but his lack of a birthright denies him the entitlements of being White. He will find himself on the wrong side of history several times. This book takes place between 1884 and 1890, ending with the massacre at Wounded Knee. The second book, American Whoreson -The Builder, is historical speculative fiction portraying fictional people in authentic and realistic fictional settings with some speculation about alternative outcomes had minor changes to actual events occurred. This book asks, "What if one thing had gone differently?" It focuses on the construction of the Addison Canal in Titusville, Florida. It is placed from 1910 to 1915. The specific question being asked is what would have happened had the canal been finished. The books include descriptions of industrial accidents involving injury and death, racism and racist language, foul language, sexism, and sexist discrimination. In this current age of political revisionism and White-washing history, lest any modern revisionist accuse me of falsifying history as they are doing, a list of sources used in my research for this novel is available on my website stagewalkerenterprises. The references are included for further study and do not constitute an endorsement. This work is unsuitable for evangelicals, MAGA, Trump supporters, or younger teens. CRT Trigger Warning!
