Even Sophie is changing, though she doesn't see her new abilities, yet. Just what is going on? A new girl comes to the school and it's not too long before the fabled tree of Thicket Hall is turning against Sophie and her friends and no longer trusts them. Someone new has stepped up, but who? Something's not right and Sophie and her friends are going to have to figure out what's going on or it just might be the end of the school and the old oak tree-permanently. Is the new girl behind this? Is she the new Marcus? Can Sophie figure out what's going on and get her friends to work together to stop it in time?

New responsibilities, new classes, new challenges. The first semester of sophomore year at the famous School of Roots and Vines has begun for life Elemental Sophie Briggs and her friends. Although Year Two brings a whirlwind of change, some things feel straight out of a not-so-ancient past. Sophie and Marcus become Combat Mentors, giving them more time together. Until Marcus's secret internship makes him miss more and more school. Something strange is happening, and things point directly at the ESCB-and Marcus. Is he becoming the villain he once was? The National Elemental Skills Trials are coming up, and Sophie and her friends are called to represent the school in faraway Colorado. Dark forces and powerful, all-too-familiar enemies are out to kidnap Sophie and steal her elemental powers. They'll stop at nothing to get their revenge. Is there a snake in the grass? Sophie, Marcus, and the gang are out to unravel the secrets of the Defenders before Sophie's magic is gone for good. Will they be too distracted? Sophie Briggs has made it to her junior year at the School of Roots and Vines, but it isn't all fun and games for the Defenders. Change is coming. Some good and some . . . not so much. Will Sophie harness a new curiosity in pursuit of the truth about them both? Marcus is set to graduate at the end of the semester. The teen romance with Sophie may end too. Then there's his spot with the Defenders. But before that happens, there's still a mystery to figure out. Will she and Marcus be able to figure out Caleb Justice's secret before it's too late?

It's the final year for most of the Defenders at the School of Roots and Vines. It's hard to imagine that Sophie is beginning her senior year and planning her wedding to Marcus the following summer. The group still needs to find their 6th Defender in order to save Thicket Hall and prevent the Serpent from being unleashed. Who is it? No one seems to know, or at least they aren't inclined to reveal themselves to the other Defenders. They may not even know what they are and that could prove a challenge when they need to defend Thicket Hall. It will be up to the intrepid group of friends to find out who is the last ally and bring them into their circle. But just as they're cruising toward the end of their time inside the ancient tree, the danger grows. Five of the Six seals guarding the Serpent have been opened. The Defenders will have to fight with everything they have to prevent Caleb and the Templetons from taking control. Is this the end for Thicket Hall and the tree? Or will the Defenders find a way to save it and the school?

The last semester of classes for Sophie Briggs at The School of Roots and Vines is racing to the end. A confrontation and battle with the Serpent, Azdaja, is fast approaching. The legendary Thicket Hall is dying and no matter what the Defenders do, they can only slow the ancient tree's death, not stop it. Could its end lead to a new beginning? If the Defenders can defeat the Serpent. Then death can lead to new life. Graduation, a wedding, a death, a rebirth, and an even bigger surprise await Sophie, Marcus, and the Defenders.
