Laura and Dan's relationship would be perfect-if it wasn't for everything else in Laura's life. As Rupert schemes to get his parents back together, Dan tempts Laura with talk of travel to exotic places, and she struggles to find a way to fit his dream into her reality. Meanwhile, tax prosecutor Katrina Fennessy arrives in town and senses an opportunity for Pearl Bay, with the help of Bob Jelly.

Max Connors returns to Pearl Bay after an absence of many years, bringing his wife, Elena, with him. A successful foreign correspondent and an old friend of Dan's, Max wants to settle down in the boatshed and write a book, but he's soon drawn into the problems of his brother and father. Struggling to get over Dan, Laura forms an instant kinship with Elena but takes an immediate dislike to Max.

With Katrina having absconded with the savings of the entire town, Bob Jelly is contemplating suicide. But when Katrina is caught red-handed through the combined efforts of Max and Sergeant Grey, the town's fortunes take a turn for the better, and then the worse, and then the better again. During this roller-coaster, Bob and Sergeant Grey each face their own moral dilemmas.

Pearl Bay is grieving, but not in any conventional sense. Max won't acknowledge or share his grief over Elena's death, refusing any gestures of support and not allowing anyone to attend the funeral. Unable to express their feelings over the death of Elena directly, the town's sadness manifests in their reactions to the drowning of Bucket's dog, Alfonzo Dominico.

Unsure of how to fulfill the responsibility thrust onto her in Elena's letter but determined to do as her friend asked, Laura delivers a steady stream of casseroles, chutneys, and jams to Max. Jack's keen for Laura to rethink their relationship, but Laura's still haunted by the memory of his affair with Trudi. Bob acquiesces to marriage counseling under the guidance of Barry Boston.

The shock of Trudi's pregnancy has left Laura angry and determined to remove Jack from her life. As Laura sets out to forget her past, the town's celebration of its history-the annual Pearl Bay Pork Festival-is imminent, but things are not running smoothly. And Max has decided to return to life as a foreign correspondent, accepting a dangerous assignment in Kosovo.

Kevin is having a recurring nightmare in which a hooded figure accuses him of having failed the truth. Is it a premonition-or the effects of Phrani's cooking? Meanwhile, Pearl Bay is turning to dust as a voracious insect devours wooden structures all over town. In working on a school project, Miranda uncovers a curious gap in Meredith's memory that points to a guilty secret in Pearl Bay's past.

During a heat wave, the fireworks intended for the centenary celebrations go up with a big bang, blowing the church hall they were stored in to smithereens. Felix, the expert employed by Bob to prepare the fireworks for the celebrations, is suspected of arson and charged-but none of that deters Miranda from her interest in the beguiling flame-twirler.

After Craig fails a math exam, Bob jumps at the opportunity to convince his son to leave school and follow his path into a glorious real estate career. But Craig is uncomfortable about evicting a tenant named Theo Lawrence, whose refusal to leave the property he's rented for 20 years lands him in jail and sparks a crisis for Craig and Bob alike.
