The BAFTA Award winner for best comedy returns with new misadventures for metal detecting hobbyists Andy (Mackenzie Crook, Pirates of the Caribbean) and Lance (Toby Jones, Witness for the Prosecution) as they search the Essex countryside for gold while dealing with their messy personal lives. To save up money for a place of their own, Andy and his wife, Becky (Rachael Stirling, The Bletchley Circle), have moved in with Becky's formidable mother (Diana Rigg, Game of Thrones), and Andy's new position as an archaeologist is not the dream job he thought it would be. Lance worries that having his daughter live with him is causing problems for his girlfriend. And to top it off, Andy and Lance may lose their favorite detecting field to the construction of a new solar farm. Beloved by fans and acclaimed by critics.
Andy and Becky have moved in with Becky's mother, Veronica, but she still dislikes Andy, even though he now has a steady job. Lance worries that having his daughter, Kate, live with him is causing problems for his girlfriend, Toni.
As Andy and Lance finally start to make some good finds in their favorite field, they run into their old rivals, Simon and Garfunkel. Toni suggests Lance try hypnotherapy to cure his seasickness, so that he can visit Toni on her houseboat.
Now sharing the field, Andy and Lance race Simon and Garfunkel for first dibs. Fed up with his archaeology job, Andy makes a rash decision, and Lance receives an unexpected visitor.
Devastated by the loss of his gold coin, Lance camps out overnight on the field and tries to catch the magpie that took it. Having quit his archaeology job, Andy takes up a temporary position, and Toni runs into Lance's ex-wife, Maggie.
Andy and Lance receive news that in addition to losing the field to the new solar farm, one of their favorite trees will be felled. Kate reaches out to Toni to help mend her relationship with Lance.
As Kate moves into Toni's houseboat, Andy prepares for the auction of his dream house. Andy and Lance plan one last hurrah before losing their field, and they open it up to other detectorists, including their rivals.
