About

Surire documents the disparate elements that form a natural and social landscape in northern Chile's isolated Surire Salt Flat, near the border with Bolivia. A Chilean Natural Monument, the salt flat and several small salt lakes make up a protected area that is home to a number of Andean species of plants and wildlife. A small number of Aymara elders live in this part of the desert, not far from trucks and machines that mine borax from an important deposit.

Video Librarian
"Surire is highly recommended as a window on an indigenous people and a fine example of modern Chilean filmmaking. The filmmakers have allowed the beauty of the land itself to comment on its relationship with the Aymara. An excellent study guide is availa"
