Two months later, Ariki remains plagued by premonitions of his boss hanging from One Lane Bridge. Stephen, meanwhile, is depressed about a local push for his resignation-collateral damage for Lois cutting Charlotte out of a lucrative land deal. When Ariki saves a distraught Stephen, Lois convinces her husband to go on a trip together. But a new case draws him and Ariki back to One Lane Bridge.

Stephen and Ariki focus on Charlotte and Haggis McCrae as the chief suspects. Before his death, Joe had filed a legal challenge that could have thwarted their multimillion-dollar subdivision project. As Joe's girlfriend, Rosa, plans a vigil, Ariki experiences unsettling visions about her being hit by a car. But he fears that acting upon them will disrupt the mysterious forces at One Lane Bridge.

After a date rape drug is found in Rosa's system, suspicion shifts to Rob Ryder. Ariki sees a horrible omen in the church following Joe's funeral and goes on a bender to escape his demons. But he gets too close to the prime suspects and jeopardizes the case.
