Yoga Elements

These lectures are intended to give an outline of Yoga, in order to prepare the student to take up, for practical purposes, the Yoga sutras of Patanjali, the chief treatise on Yoga. I have on hand, with my friend Bhagavan Das as collaborateur, a translation of these Sutras, with Vyasa's commentary, and a further commentary and elucidation written in the light of Theosophy. To prepare the student for the mastering of that more difficult task, these lectures were designed; hence the many references to Patanjali. They may, however, also serve to give to the ordinary lay reader some idea of the Science of sciences, and perhaps to allure a few towards its study.

Vedanta is one of the six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophy. Vedanta reflects ideas and philosophies contained in the Upanishads. It does not stand for one comprehensive or unifying doctrine. This book focuses on themes of reincarnation, evolution, and transmigration. Nothing is destroyed in the universe.

Student! Your life is your own. You have only yourself to thank for what you are, have been and will be. Take your present into your own hand. Consciously shape out of it your future. Direct your forces along lines of study and endeavour that have the strongest attraction for you. Such attraction is the indication of need. It is the hand pointing out your Life-purpose.

Karma yoga, also called Karma marga, is one of the several spiritual paths in Hinduism, one based on the yoga of action. Karma yogi believe that right work done well is a form of prayer. It is one of the paths in the spiritual practices of Hindus. Of the paths to spiritual liberation in Hinduism, karma yoga is the path of unselfish action.

The Upanishads are part of the Vedas, ancient Sanskrit texts containing some of the central philosophical concepts and ideas of Hinduism, some of which are shared with religious traditions like Buddhism and Jainism. Of all Vedic literature, the Upanishads alone are widely known, and their central ideas are at the spiritual core of Hindus.

One of the most common mistaken conceptions of the average student of the occult sciences, and of so-called "psychic phenomena" in general, is that which may be expressed by the term "supernatural." This term, as you know, is used to express the idea of "that which is outside of the realm of Nature, and of Nature's laws."
