Shell McMillan and her feline friends must unravel a mystery where everyone's a suspect and no one's to blame . . . With the grand re-opening of her Urban Tails Pet Shop just days away, Shell McMillan has her hands full planning entertainment for the festive event, including a fortune-telling parrot. But her jubilant mood is soon threatened by ominous rumors of the return of Johnny Draco, a former investment guru who swindled money from most of the residents of Fox Hollow and then vanished without a trace. And when the parrot predicts a dire future for Draco and his dead body is found just hours later, no one can say they're surprised-but no one will say who did it. With virtually everyone in town a suspect, the police turn their focus on a good friend of Shell's who was seen arguing with the victim shortly before his death. Determined to clear her friend's name, Shell begins investigating Draco's past, his former employer, and everyone who lost money to him. And when the trail of clues suggests there may have been a completely different motive for the murder, Shell suddenly realizes she's uncovered a secret someone would kill to keep hidden-and that if she's not careful, the parrot may be predicting she has no future at all . . .

Persuading her to let him use a shed on her property where he can work in peace, Shell is horrified when she finds his dead body there. And with obvious signs of foul play, she can't help but investigate the murder. As she digs into the man's past, it becomes apparent that at one point or another he was romantically entangled with just about every woman involved in the play. And just when Shell discovers he may have been blackmailing one of them, other clues surface that suggest a more sinister motive. With her hands already full with a beautiful stray cat she found and christened Princess Fuzzypants, Shell will have to fill two roles, caring for the Maine coon and trying to track down the killer before it's her turn for a fatal curtain call . . .

But the event has drawn some shady characters as well, including Pete Martin, who seems determined to get his hands on a beat-up old jewelry box at any cost. Then Martin is found murdered, and Shell has to go from fundraising to finding a killer. It doesn't take long for Shell to figure out that the jewelry box was concealing diamonds from a long-ago heist, and that Martin wasn't the only one trying to get his hands on the stash. But to figure out who wanted him dead, she'll have to uncover who was behind the original heist and who knows where the rest of the gems are hidden. It's as dangerous a case as Shell has ever faced, and if she's not careful, her search for the missing stones will leave her stone-cold dead...

With adopt-a-cat month in full swing in Fox Hollow, pet shop owner Shell McMillan decides that hosting a night of murder mystery dinner theater will be a fun way to raise funds for the cause. But she didn't realize that the celebrity chef she'd hired for the event would turn out to be a tyrannical snob, or that her scoundrel of an ex-fiancé would turn up with his own shady agenda. Still, the show must go on, and as the lighthearted plot on-stage unfolds, the scene off-stage turns decidedly darker when the chef is found murdered. Rather than question an entire roomful of possible suspects, Shell determines that looking into the victim's past will lead her to the culprit more quickly. What she finds is that the chef had left behind a disreputable past and a trail of disgruntled people, including a long string of women he'd wronged and a host of others who may have been out for revenge. But as Shell closes in on the killer, the killer is closing in on her. And she's discovering that while too many cooks can spoil the broth, being a murderer's next target can really ruin your appetite . . .
