"Jack! What are you doing, why aren't you... " Daniel stopped in his tracks and stared at him. His low voice was filled with apprehension. "Why is it so hot up here?"
Dabruzzi ran past them without pausing. Jack coughed, then coughed again, clinging to the pain searing his throat, an anchor against a different pain, one he could never articulate.
Something wriggled inside his cape. He glanced down at the miniature dog, Spiffy. They hadn't been able to find the tunnel to the surface until it had jumped out of the cape and scampered up behind a rock fall. The animal had saved them, but it might have only delayed the inevitable. Jack reached in, unconsciously reassuring it with a gentle pat, feeling its warm life against his hand. "Our friendly neighborhood volcano decided to erupt all over the Stargate." He swallowed the grit in his mouth and stood.
Daniel's eyes opened wide in disbelief. "What about Sam and the other kids?"
"They're dead." Jack's voice was as cracked and brittle as the cinders that covered the ground. "They're all dead."

"Damn it!" Watts yelled from the DHD. "This is pointless, sir! It won't stay open!"
Standing up slowly, Major Henry Boyd glanced up at the twisting nightmare in the sky. It looked like some hideous creature come to tear them to pieces. "Keep trying," he told the Captain.
"Sir?" Lieutenant Jessica McLeod ripped her gaze from the sky, voice shaking. "I've been thinking about why the gate won't activate.
The gravitational force of the-" She stammered over the word. "Of the black hole would create a massive time distortion effect."
He stalked toward her, frowning. "A what?"
"Time here will be moving much slower than back on Earth, sir. Much slower. The gate was probably open for half an hour at the SGC, but here...just a second."
Boyd felt his heart clench tight. "What are you saying, Lieutenant?"
She looked bleak. "I don't think we're getting out of this one, sir."
Lucy. His daughter was the first thought in his head. Sweet, innocent, adoring Lucy. Her little arms around his neck, her delighted smile when he came home. Daddy! He swallowed hard. "I won't accept that, Lieutenant." Lucy, barely old enough to understand. Heather, having to explain why he was never coming home again. "They'll find a way to come get us. They won't leave us here."

There were no amenities in the stone room they were, left in by Va'ton and his Jaffa subordinates. No benches. No blankets. No pillows. Typical Goa'uld hospitality. There was, however, a big messy dried bloodstain on the prison cell floor.
Daniel wasn't going to think about that.
He took off his shirt, bundled it up, and put it beneath Jack's lolling head. It wasn't much but it was better than nothing. God, he was hungry. Light-headed. More than a little shaky. The cut on his hand had long since stopped dribbling but it still hurt. He was reasonably sure it was infected. Which was nothing, compared to the trouble they were in. Standard O'Neill reply: Don't worry, Daniel. We've been in worse.
Okay. Maybe. Once. Sitting in a corridor covered in blood, having just been shot to bits by a Jaffa staff weapon, on a mother ship rigged to the rafters with C4, knowing his wound would probably kill him first, knowing Jack and Sam and Teal'c were going to die soon, too.
He'd survived that one. So had they. But, even cats only got nine lives and he wasn't a cat. How many times could he tap-dance on the brink of death before that final, fatal plunge?
Please God. Let us be rescued soon.

O'Neill shot him a look. "Teal'c's been on the wrong end of a Goa'uld pain-stick enough times to know what it's like, Daniel. And I had my fair share too. It's not something he'd say lightly."
"I can't believe we're even having this conversation." Jackson shook his head.
"I didn't say we were gonna stretch her on a rack, damn it!" The colonel's temper flared briefly. "But we might have to ask some hard questions. I'm thinking we could call in the Tok'ra, maybe use that mind-scanner gizmo they got."
"You say that like it's the gentler option."
Jack stopped and looked the other man in the eye. "Hey!" He snapped his fingers in front of Daniel's face. "Hey, Space Monkey! Look at me! What's goin' on? This woman lied her ass off to you, she tried to blow us all up, and here you are stepping up to defend her? Am I missing something?"

The Barque of Heaven
Jack looked around, through the little clouds of his breath condensing in the still, frigid air. Maybe this niche in the tunnel walls would offer a few moments' respite. No movement showed in the passage they had just raced through. Ahead, another tunnel angled away into the darkness, offering at least somewhere else to run.
His team gathered near him, faces turned toward the tunnels and watchful for any hint of pursuit. Carter balanced on her left leg as she scanned the darkness, denying the ache in her right ankle, twisted on the treacherously slick rock. Teal'c faced the opposite direction, alert as ever, yet his utter weariness could be seen in his slumped shoulders and slowing movements, his skin an unhealthy grayish hue.
Daniel was leaning against the dank wall, the façade of stubbornness on his face slipping as surely as his body was sliding down the uneven rocks, his lungs now emitting little more than a distressed wheeze. His left fist was still firmly, planted on the pain below his ribs.
Jack shifted, vainly trying to ease the muscles knotted along his spine and the stabbing pain that had been his constant companion for what seemed like his entire life.
How the hell did, we end up like this?
Movement flickered in the corner of his eye, Carter's hand coming up and signaling they were about to be discovered.
He sucked in a gasp of cold air, reached over and grabbed a fistful of Daniel's shirt, helping his teammate as they staggered off in Teal'c's wake - plunging on into the unknown.
Within seconds, SG-1 had vanished into the darkness, the eternal rock showing no trace of their passing.

Killing time...

Daniel glared at Dixon, arms defiantly folded. "I don't care what Fraiser said. Fraiser's not here, and she's not my superior officer. You're not my superior officer either, Dave. I'm telling you, flat out, we are not leaving that poor girl alone out there overnight while she's sick and suffering."
Beyond the retreat's open door the sun was setting, the Adjoan sky streaking from blue to pink. It'd be dark soon, and if he had to argue with Dixon till his tongue fell out he wasn't going to let some stupid medical protocol get in the way of doing what was right.
"Would you leave one of your men out there?" he continued. "No. So if you're suggesting Lotar's somehow a second-class citizen because she's not from Earth then -"
"Whoah, whoah, settle down," said Dixon, a bite in his voice. "Did I say that? What I said was that bringing another sick person in here could increase our chances, yours and mine, of catching whatever the hell it is that's going round. Because we're not sick yet and I'd like to keep it that way."
"Oh for crying out loud!" he shouted. "We're already exposed."

Teal'c stepped forward, ready to exchange traditional greetings, but Jack put a hand on his shoulder, a subtle command. Bra'tac's posture was stiff, and he barely glanced at either Jack or Teal'c. Beneath Jack's hand, Teal'c tensed.
"Welcome, Master Bra'tac," Hammond said.
No answering smile came from Bra'tac. Instead, he nodded to Hammond and said, "Hammond of Texas. I have come to ask for an explanation for your actions on the mountain world of the Eshet and to tell you the trust of the Jaffa has been broken."
Jack had never heard Bra'tac express mistrust of the Tauri since those very earliest days. The hair rose on the back of his neck. "Bra'tac, what the hell are you talking about?"
"I am speaking of the massacre which occurred on Eshet yesterday, the massacre led by your team in pursuit of technology owned by the people of that world."

Teal'c frowned. "On the inside, Daniel Jackson?"
Daniel leaned back, looking suddenly sheepish. "Yeah, well, when I was examining the scabbard I, uh, sort of dropped it."
"And let me guess," O'Neill said. "It sort of broke. Didn't they teach you not to drop priceless ancient artifacts back in Archaeology 101?"
Daniel pursed his lips in irritation, but he took hold of the scabbard and lifted one side of it away from the other. He held up the split piece and turned the inside toward the others so they could see the runes etched within. "On the inside, written in Asgard, is a gate address - one previously unknown to us. The address is accompanied by a single word: Valhalla."

Teal'c roared.
Fifty feet from the gate the blue water of the event horizon ripped out of the aperture. The way home was open. O'Neill had done it. Teal'c saw the colonel go down again. The sucking silence that followed was hideous. Then both Carter and Daniel Jackson were yelling, this time the sound was primal and filled with fear for the fallen O'Neill.
Teal'c ducked beneath a wild burst of fire from a Jaffa weapon, and ran, hard, fast, keeping low, his arms and legs pumping. A burning man staggered across his path. The flames consumed him, turning his flesh to blistered sores. Teal'c fired once, putting the Jaffa out of his misery, and was past him. He ran to O'Neill's side and gathered him into his arms. The colonel shuddered once, violently, and opened his eyes. "Go!" he rasped.
"Indeed," Teal'c said, rising. He watched Daniel Jackson's back disappear through the gate and followed him. "We do not leave men behind, O'Neill. That is the law.

Part 16 of the Stargate SG-1 series
War games...
It was meant to be a soft mission, something to ease Doctor Daniel Jackson back into things after his time among the Ancients - after all, what could possibly go wrong on a simple survey of ancient Chinese ruins? As it turns out, a whole lot.
After accidentally activating a Goa'uld transport ring, Daniel finds himself the prisoner of Lord Yu, the capricious Goa'uld System Lord. Four Dragons
Unable to stand, unable to sit, Daniel hung from handcuffs latched to the top and side of a barely four-foot high cage. He tried to shift his weight, crouching in an awkward position that did little to stop the aches in his shoulders and thighs.
He'd heard about cages like this one. Communist China allegedly used them to torture political prisoners. After a few days, the victim's legs would become swollen. In severe cases, necrosis can happen to feet, ankles and legs. Usually, the cages were set outdoors, exposing the prisoner to the elements.
In Daniel's case, the cage was set just outside the door to Yu's throne room.
So much for scoping out an escape route.
He closed his eyes, exhausted. Other than a short nap in a cell on Yu's mothership, he hadn't slept in...
Daniel wasn't sure how long it'd been. More importantly, he had no idea if Jack, Sam, or Teal'c had any idea where he was...

Oceans Of Dust
"DEATH GLIDER." It was close enough now to be unmistakable; a glossy crescent howling down out of the sky towards him. As soon as he had, spoken the machine unleashed its energies a second time; O'Neill saw gouts of fire spitting from its cannons. He dived for cover, throwing himself behind a boulder. There was a whiplash impact as a shot hit the rock, an earsplitting din of frozen stone superheating and exploding away in lethal shards, and bolts of fire were ripping past as the glider fired over-and-over into the plateau. O'Neill felt the punch of each blast through his boots, through his bleeding hands as he crouched.
A shadow crossed him, viciously quick, as the glider hammered through the air over his head, and he heard the electric whoop of a staff weapon as Teal'c sent darts of energy lashing up into the sky. A shot connected, spattered uselessly off a wing. The glider flew level for a second or two, then rose into a smooth, almost vertical climb, accelerated into a blur. In a heartbeat, it was lost to the clouds.
"Damn," muttered O'Neill, getting up. He was starting to hurt all over. "That turned up fast."

All that glitters...
Colonel Jack O'Neill wants a relaxing mission for SG-1 as they recover from Sha're's death at the hands of Teal'c and the horrors of Sokar's prison world of Ne'tu. The trade negotiations on Saday look like just the ticket, until the pirates show up.
Captured by rival bands of treasure hunters in search of the mythical Heart's Desire, the team must fight to stay alive and to find each other among the vast mountains and ravines of a world where pirates captain airships and down is a very long way indeed.

Heart's Desire
"What happened?"
Jack squinted, blinking through watering eyes to try to see if there was any obvious damage. He couldn't see any, although the upper side of the canopy was out of view. Still, the canopy didn't seem to be deforming as he thought it would be if the lightning strike had ripped through its canvas.
"I think we just found out that we do have lightning rods!"
Carter's voice rose a notch. "Did we get hit by lightning?"
"Fix the drive!"
"I'm trying!"
Jack's numb hands were slipping on the steering column, the metal slick with ice. He spared a glance down under his feet, and then let himself slide, finding his footing on the underside of the canopy. He scrubbed snow out of his face with the back of his hand, but the icy glove wasn't much help.
Anywhere that isn't hot for our next mission, he'd said after Ne'tu. Just send us anywhere that isn't hot.
"I take it back!" he yelled, but the wind whipped the words away.

Daniel stepped to the edge of the platform. "Jack, what's going on?"
"We're gating out of here, that's what." Jack rushed over to the DHD. "We'll head to the Alpha site."
"Wait a minute!" Daniel ran down the platform steps. Sam and Teal'c followed close behind. "Don't we want to figure out where 'here' is, first?"
"Not really, no." Jack jabbed a finger in the air. "Someone's playing games with us and I'm not in the mood."
Someone needed to calm their normally fearless leader fast. Fortunately, Teal'c took the fall. "O'Neill, have you any memory of-?"
"Nada. Bupkiss." Jack's voice lowered.
"Me, either," said Daniel. "The last thing I remember was..."
Sam frowned. "Well, that's odd."
"Carter?"
"Sir, I remember who I am." She gestured at Jack, then Daniel and Teal'c. "I remember all of you, but-"
"Yeah, I'm having trouble, too," Daniel said. "My long-term memory's fine, but short-term's-"
"Gone," Jack whispered.

"My apologies, sir. I turned my back for one minute, suddenly it's the end of the world."
"I won't judge you too harshly. I've been on the receiving end of that myself."
"Thank you, sir."
Jack glared at Daniel. "First mission after defeating the Goa'uld."
"I'm aware."
"A nice leisurely temple to explore, nothing to get excited about except a few dusty carvings."
"I know."
Jack thumped the back of his hand against Daniel's chest.
"First time leaving your office in weeks and you go and find a doomsday weapon."

"What we know for certain at this point is that Dr. Oliver died of targonine poisoning," Landry said, and Carolyn nodded assent.
"The poison on the weapons he was working with killed him."
"So we're talking workplace accident here," Mitchell said.
"I really wish we were," Carolyn said after a pause that hung in the air just a little too long. "Certainly that's what I thought when I first examined him. I just couldn't find any signs of a scratch or a cut. Targonine isn't absorbed through the skin - it would have to either get into his bloodstream through an open wound or be ingested. Which was my next theory, but I still couldn't figure out how he'd gotten the poison into his mouth. Not until we got back the lab results on the coffee he was drinking. We sent it in just as a routine thing, just so we didn't leave any stone unturned. As it turns out, that was a very good thing."
"There was poison in his coffee?" Vala prompted, when it seemed as though someone was going to have to.
"Enough poison that it couldn't possibly have gotten there accidentally," Carolyn said. "Based on our analysis of what was left in his cup, I think someone must have scraped off the sticky residue from part of the weapon and stirred it into the coffee."
"Wouldn't he have tasted it?" Mitchell asked.
Carolyn looked at him askance. "You've drunk the coffee here, right?

"Teal'c, get down!"
Teal'c ignored him and Jack could see the crackle of energy at the tip of his weapon as he took aim.
The first death glider strafed the ground around them, kicking up jagged bits of stone and dirt. A large chunk of shrapnel hit the rock just by Jack's head and he ducked reflexively. Coughing, he swung out from behind the boulder and took aim at the second glider coming in from behind the first one. Jack could hear the pings of his bullets ricocheting off the ship's hull as it zoomed overhead.
From the pitch of the sound, Jack knew they were circling around for another attack. He'd heard the sharp staccato sound of Carter's P90 as she fired too, but her weapon was as worthless as his against such an attack. Only Teal'c had any chance of bringing down the ships.
Jack assessed their options. They were sitting ducks out in the open like this, but if they all made a break for the tree line they'd never make it before the death gliders swung around again.
They were, screwed.
Female of the Species

Here come the girls...
Vala Mal Doran, SG-1's newest recruit, simply can't ignore the plea for help she receives from her old friend, Tanis Reynard. And, with vital intel up for grabs, Vala ensures SG-1 can't ignore it either...
