I'm good with dragons, even my soon-to-be-brother-in-law says so, but the dragon I choose to fly on my mission to Prathniss is not an easy one to handle. I end up falling from his back and making an unlikely friend as a result. A powerful ability neither of us understands nearly kills both of us, but the close calls with death don't hurt nearly as much as what happens when I recover my wayward dragon. A few kind people help me on my way. However, as I continue with what I need to do, I know it's not what I want to do, and a newly discovered part of myself perishes.

Jax's sister is afraid Jax is going to ruin her wedding. Meanwhile, Jax just wants to be free from so many chores and expectations. When his friends on Teluthia warn him about a possible invasion, he feels only more weight added to his burden. However, according to most officials on the foreign world, the crashed starship full of dead soldiers in full fighting gear is nothing more than a well-prepared exploration party. Jax and his friends know better, but they may be too late. Together, Jax, the creature Tranto and the Teluthians make a desperate stand against the threat that seeks to destroy their world. But it is not the darkness of Teluthia's decimation that overshadows Tranto and, thereby, Jax. As victory appears within reach, a shadow falls, and nothing remains as it should.

Victory on Teluthia means nothing for Jax after he and his friends were yanked from the planet and imprisoned with bonds they can't explain. One excruciating loss after another besets them. But none hurts quite so much as Tranto's betrayal. It's not unfeasible that he has been working with their captors from the start. Rescue is attempted, but Jax doesn't realize he's aiding his captors. After being left to die, Jax wakes on a dying world to a life full of memories he desperately wants to forget. In a final, destructive showdown, with the count of the slain and wounded rising, Jax faces chilling ramifications for every possible outcome. Somehow, victory must be attained against an enemy that cannot be defeated by physical combat alone.

It's been difficult for Jax to fit back into the normal pace of life since Tranto abandoned him. His other friendships fail to fill the barren place left in his mind where he had felt truly understood. And then, what he had given up hope for happens. However, Jax finds an utter lack of everything he recognizes and a desolate wasteland swallowing him. He soon learns that the stars cannot constrain him-but neither are they limits for others. Surrounded by people who could be friends or foes, Jax plunges into chaos and uncertainty. But power, wielded with a malignant inconsideration for life, could be his undoing. Those he cannot trust could imprison him at any turn-if they don't kill him first.
