Sophie Fournier

Sophie Fournier is the first woman drafted into the North American Hockey League. Playing hockey is something she's done all her life, but she faces new challenges as she finds her place on the struggling Concord Condors. She has to prove herself better than her rival-turned-teammate, Michael Hayes, and her rival-turned-friend, Dmitri Ivanov, and she has to do it all with a smile. If she's successful then she opens the door to other women being drafted. She can't afford to think about what happens if she fails. All she knows is this: if she's not the best then she doesn't get to play. No pressure, though.

Entering her second season in the North American Hockey League, Sophie Fournier sets her expectations high. The Concord Condors will make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. They have the veteran core to do it and the new talent to give them the extra push. From the beginning, things don't go according to plan. The season begins without one of their best players, and they lose others to injury and trades as the season progresses. Hockey is a team sport, and Sophie can't drag them to the playoffs on her own. Is her voice loud enough to convince her team to believe the way she does?

Entering her third season, Sophie Fournier has almost everything she wants. She's the captain of the Concord Condors, she's roommates and linemates with Elsa Nyberg, the elite Swedish winger she's wanted to play alongside since the Zurich U-Tourney. There are two major things she's missing, though. She doesn't have her next contract lined up, and she still hasn't won the Maple Cup, hockey's most coveted prize. If she wins the Cup, she'll have leverage going into her contract negotiations. And, in case she needed more motivation, this is Benoit Delacroix's final season as a Concord Condor, and she's determined he won't retire without lifting the Cup.

Winning the Maple Cup has always been Sophie Fournier's dream, ever since she was a little girl watching hockey in her grandparents' basement. She isn't satisfied after a season where she won hockey's biggest prize. She wants to hoist the Cup again, in back-to-back seasons. She's done it once before and, like any good hockey player, she knows to repeat a successful formula in order to find success again. Only, this season is determined to be nothing like the last. Coach Butler breaks up not only the top line which drove their success, but he splits Sophie and Elsa. She's cut off from her favorite winger on the ice and off it, Elsa begins to date, leaving Sophie on her own. And with this being a Winter Games year, their NAHL season is halted for international play. For the first time since becoming teammates, Sophie will compete against Elsa for a gold medal. It's a year of change and Sophie hates it. She knows what worked to win the Cup the previous season. Now, with multiple factors working against her, including her own coach, she has to figure out a new way to win the Cup. If she can't, it will be her shoulders the blame falls on.

After two seasons without winning another Maple Cup, the pressure is on for Sophie Fournier to win the NAHL's biggest prize. It's her sixth season in the North American Hockey League, and she knows what she needs to do, and how to do it. Only, she isn't the only one feeling the pressure to win. Coach Butler's job is in jeopardy if he can't repeat the success from Sophie's third season. As his vision for the team drifts away from Concord's identity, Sophie is left with a difficult choice. Does she unite the team behind Coach Butler's vision and risk losing her team's identity? Or, does she unite the Condors against their coach and risk her captaincy and her future with the team?

Sophie's coach was fired over the summer but not before he took several parting shots at Sophie's character and dedication to her sport and her team. Her coach's firing, her own injury, and her team's whimpering exit from the playoffs weren't the ideal way to end a season, but Sophie's looking forward to a fresh start. If Sophie is on the ice, everything makes sense. She can navigate a new coach, she can handle a strained relationship with Elsa, and she can breathe hope back into her franchise. An unprecedented hot start to the season sees Sophie breaking NAHL records. She has her sights set on Bobby Brindle's point streak record, the one she fell short of breaking in her rookie season. With personal success comes team success, and Concord has a resurgence on the back of Sophie's accomplishments. And then she's injured. She has to spend the rest of the season on the sidelines, and it forces her to confront a question she has never considered before. Who is Sophie Fournier when she isn't playing hockey?
