At the Earth's Core
by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Part 1 of the Pellucidar series
The author relates how, traveling in the Sahara desert, he has encountered a remarkable vehicle and its pilot, David Innes, a man with a remarkable story to tell. David Innes is a mining heir who finances the experimental "iron mole," an excavating vehicle designed by his elderly inventor friend Abner Perry. In a test run, they discover the vehicle cannot be turned, and it burrows 500 miles into the Earth's crust, emerging into the unknown interior world of Pellucidar. In Burroughs' concept, the Earth is a hollow shell with Pellucidar as the internal surface of that shell.

When American explorer David Innes first discovered Pellucidar, he fell under the spell of the strange world, earning the respect of many, the undying hatred of a few, and the love of the beautiful Dian. Torn from her arms by trickery, Innes vows revenge and returns to the Inner World to seek his lost love. Innes breaks through the earth's outer crust, far from his beloved, and is forced to cross a fierce, unyielding world to reach her. At the Earth's Core
by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Part of the Pellucidar series
Telepathic birds, cavemen and prehistoric monsters. Not exactly what you would expect to find at the centre of the Earth!
'At the Earth's Core' is the first novel in Burroughs' fantasy series about the fictional Hollow Earth land of Pellucidar. The narrator finds a strange machine and its engineer in the Sahara desert, from whom he learns about the machine's objective. Popularizing the concept of the "Hollow Earth" in fiction, Burroughs depicts a haunting subterranean world of endless oceans, vast jungles, and bizarre weather conditions. The author expresses the ludicrous and ridiculous beliefs of the seventeenth and eighteenth-century scientists that the earth was hollow, explaining some of its anomalies.
"At the Earth's Core" was made into a movie in 1976 starring Doug McClure and Caroline Munro. The vivid natural descriptions, terrific adventures, and fascinating characters make this novel a must for fans of Burroughs and the fantasy genre.
