Deep under the earth's surface is the mysterious realm of Pellucidar, where humans are subject to evil reptilian masters. Adventurer David Innes comes to the rescue in their desperate struggle for freedom.

The author relates how, traveling in the Sahara desert, he has encountered a remarkable vehicle and its pilot, David Innes, a man with a remarkable story to tell. David Innes is a mining heir who finances the experimental "iron mole," an excavating vehicle designed by his elderly inventor friend Abner Perry. In a test run, they discover the vehicle cannot be turned, and it burrows 500 miles into the Earth's crust, emerging into the unknown interior world of Pellucidar. In Burroughs' concept, the Earth is a hollow shell with Pellucidar as the internal surface of that shell.

The book is about a group of adventurers who travel to the Earth's core in order to save the planet from impending doom. The core is a place of incredible heat and pressure, and the adventurers must brave these dangers in order to stop a madman from destroying the world.

David Innes returns to the hollow earth land of Pellucidar to resume the human war of independence, but he has to fight some more personal battles first.

The author's friend Jason Gridley is experimenting with a new radio frequency he dubs the Gridley Wave, via which he picks up a transmission sent by scientist Abner Perry, from the interior world of Pellucidar at the Earth's core, a realm discovered by the latter and his friend David Innes many years before. There Innes and Perry have established an Empire of Pellucidar, actually a confederation of tribes, and attempted with mixed success to modernize the stone-age natives. Lately things have not gone well, and Innes is currently held captive in an enemy realm. Perry transmits a lengthy account of how this has come about, as reported by Innes's native comrade in arms Tanar, and appeals for aid from the outer world.

The story reveals the fate of Wilhelm von Horst, the lost member of the previous book's outer world expedition to Pellucidar, which had been led by Jason Gridley and Tarzan to rescue Pellucidarian emperor David Innes from the Korsars. The action begins by recapping the incident in which Gridley, von Horst, and Tarzan's Waziri warriors, led by Muviro, are caught up in and separated by a horde of sabre-toothed tigers' cooperative hunt. Now on his own, von Horst quickly becomes lost, links up again with the Waziri by accident, and gets lost again when he foolishly goes out hunting on his own.

The novel relates the adventures of David Innes on his return from Lo-Har to Sari in the wake of the events of Back to the Stone Age.

Two separate search parties are looking for the lost ones without knowing the other has already found the ones they are seeking.

Popularizing the concept of the "Hollow Earth" in fiction, Burroughs depicts a haunting subterranean world of endless oceans, vast jungles, and bizarre weather conditions. The author expresses the ludicrous and ridiculous beliefs of the seventeenth and eighteenth-century scientists that the earth was hollow, explaining some of its anomalies. "At the Earth's Core" was made into a movie in 1976 starring Doug McClure and Caroline Munro. The vivid natural descriptions, terrific adventures, and fascinating characters make this novel a must for fans of Burroughs and the fantasy genre.
