The scene of this story is laid in Kentucky. Its heroine is a small girl, who is known as the Little Colonel, on account of her fancied resemblance to an old-school Southern gentleman, whose fine estate and old family are famous in the region.

Because of an illness in the family that her mother has to attend to, Lloyd Sherman, the Little Colonel, is shipped off to boarding school from her home in Lloydsboro Valley, Kentucky. During the semester, the Little Colonel becomes friends with Ida Shane, founds a Shadow Club to raise money for the poor, and attends her very first Halloween masquerade. But as the Little Colonel returns home to her loving family and awaits the beginning of the New Year, she learns the most important lesson of her time away at school: absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Following her successful house party, Lloyd Sherman, the Little Colonel, finds her friends returning to their homes as the end of the summer approaches, signaling the beginning of the school year. While Joyce, Eugenia, and Betty return to their homes, the Little Colonel begins to regret having met her friends, due to the loneliness of having to lose them again. But as Christmas approaches, the Little Colonel finds herself volunteering at the children�s hospital where, through her dying friend, Dot, she learns the true meaning of the holidays and of friendship.

The childish adventures of Lloyd Sherman, the Little Colonel, come to an end in The Little Colonel�s Knight Comes Riding, the last in the Little Colonel series. After their return to Lloydsboro Valley, Kentucky, from Warwick Hall in Washington D.C., the Little Colonel and friends Kitty Walton and Betty Lewis find that the young boys they have grown up with have matured into graceful young men. The Little Colonel struggles between her desire to still be a child and her desire to live the life of a sophisticated young woman.
