Just when saving the world got fun again… Keeper Claire Hansen's job has never been better. There are still rips in the fabric of the universe for her to repair; disasters to avert, memories to adjust. But it's far pleasanter with a handsome, funny Bystander driving Claire and her talking cat through the sleet and snow in a warm truck, reminding her to eat occasionally. As long as she can keep him safe, Dean is better than loveable, he's great company. Except Claire knows she can't keep him safe and it's her duty as a Keeper to refuse his great company, along with everything else he's offering. Which is Keeper-speak for reluctantly dumping his admittedly amazing ass-et al-and continuing on her own. But the Powers-That-Be have other ideas and next thing they know their uh… reunion has resulted in an Angel and Demon running around Ontario with a few additions to their traditionally genderless anatomy. One agent of cosmic chaos would be bad; two is terrifying. Add in the way Claire's equally chaotic teenage sister is interfering, and this might be the battle of the sexes that ends it all…

But it beats the assignments older Keepers get. She'd hate to be stuck in one place for decades, minding a breach too big to mend. Then Claire finds herself in Kingston, Ontario, at a bed-and-breakfast with a literal gate to Hell in the basement, its assigned guardian nowhere to be found. It's fully stocked with weird-an evil Sleeping Beauty, a French-Canadian sailor's ghost, technicolor imps the cat denies seeing. The only employee is a Clark Kent-handsome Newfie with zero magic and less instinct for self-preservation. And guests keep arriving, with very particular demands. Disentangling history, mystery, and magic while keeping the B&B's doors open and the gates of Hell firmly shut has proven impossible before now. But since the alternative is being trapped forever, Claire will give it a try…
