Commander George Gideon of Scotland Yard attended the Fiftieth Criminal Investigation Ball, along with his wife, Kate, and daughter, Penny. Gideon finds himself risking his life so as to protect the force and its reputation, when everything seems ranged against it. And, of course, ordinary day to day policing must continue.

The fog was thick, yellow, sulphurous and impenetrable and just like old times before clean air legislation. Beneath it the villains went about their work quietly and largely undisturbed.
