Fated Touch

Jane is a normal orphan with unusual grandparents. She doesn't realize how unusual until she returns on holiday from college to discover that her grandmother has been kidnapped. Her grandfather reveals that her kidnappers are a new foe from an old world, and her grandmother's only hope is for them to travel to the other side after her. The Shifting World, however, isn't as easy as ours. Every monster, witch, demon, and other mystical fable that haunts the fairytale books of our world resides among those lands. Jane finds herself stumbling through one adventure after another as she tries to learn the ropes, and the magic, of the new world in order to save her grandmother, and herself. Even a place as strange as the Shifting World, however, has its familiar handsome men. One of them is Caius, a dragon shifter with a sly smile and a glint in his eyes. He joins their search for her missing grandmother, but Jane isn't so sure it isn't another member of her family that he's interested in.

The Shifting World holds many wondrous mysteries and magics, but Jane finds herself unique among them in her power to touch an object and have visions. That unique ability intrigues her grandfather enough to lead them to the city of Rubris, a metropolis buried underneath an unhealthy fascination for junk. They search for an item that will activate her ability and find one in the most unlikely object, an old compass. The compass points in an unknown direction, but they quickly learn that it leads to trouble. A mysterious guild wants the compass and will do anything to have it, including killing them. Jane wants to ditch the compass, but she finds herself unable to throw away the cursed item. A deeper impulse than survival keeps her holding onto the trouble. It's a feeling that both frightens and attracts her, and she's left wondering if maybe fate is leading her to a greater destiny than she can imagine.

The deeper Jane delves into the Shifting World, the stronger her power to read objects grows. She finds herself facing another trial because of her ability, and this one leads her into more deadly peril than she's ever faced before. Her group is led to their new adventure by an ancient relic of the Shifting World, a pistol with a dark past. That past is revived with Jane's touch, but she unearths more than just visions. She becomes a part of those secrets as they trap her in the emotions of its long-dead memories. Those emotions fall on her lover, Caius, and a dreadful fear rises within her that something terrible will happen to one of them if they continue searching for the answers to the relic. While Jane and her friends find enough trouble with the pistol, they discover they aren't the only ones after its secrets. Soon they're trapped between two warring factions over the fate of the relic and their very lives.

The first novel in the three-part Angel Fable arc. Jane and her companions decide to enjoy the Shifting World for once, and find themselves fortunate to arrive in time for the Festival of Gad, a joyous time of celebration held every four years in honor of the prime deity of the world. Unfortunately, their vacation plans are burned to ashes when one of the ceremonies is lit aflame under suspicious circumstances. Worse still, Jane keeps seeing a man dressed not the plain clothes of the Shifting World, but in dark attire worn in our realm. He looks straight at her without blinking, and she has a creeping feeling that he can see more than what's on the surface. When she's confronted about the truth of his identity, her world gets a little more complicated, and dangerous. Now Jane and her companions must help stop a dark plan to lay waste to the festival, or die trying.

For Jane, the cold winter of exile creeps up on her and her friends in their new abodes in Mechta. However, fate intervenes in the form of an offer of clemency from an old friend of Caius. The catch is they must earn their pardon by protecting the canta, a young woman of exceptional ability who must sing before the faithful of Gad at the Edict. They agree to the task and find themselves at one of the holiest cities of Gad, Sacratia. Though under the sanctuary of the canta, their troubles with the Blue Binds haven't ended and they soon find themselves clashing heads with their old foes. On top of old troubles, new problems arise in their role as protectors to the canta. Their protection becomes essential as their mysterious foe tries to stop the canta from performing, even if it means sending her for a personal performance before Gad himself. If they fail then it's the final curtain for all of them.

After many adventures Jane and her companions just want a relaxing vacation at one of the long beeches in the east. Unfortunately, fate has other plans in store for them as they meet an unusual boy on their way to the quaint seaside village. The boy is more than meets the eye, and they're not the only ones interested in him. Their old lumina companion Alex reappears and brings with him some unwelcome and demanding company. An opposing faction crawls out of the shadows and also tries to convince the gifted lad to go with them, leading to confrontations where Jane and her friends are stuck in the middle. To complicate matters, rumors exist of a witch of black magic who lives in a nearby cave. She is said to have a unique ability not unlike that possessed by Jane. They go in search of the mysterious hag, and Jane hopes that finally, after so long, she might find the answers she's looking for in finding her place in this strange new world.

Jane and the others have left behind the Island of Shadows, but they can't leave behind the lingering consequences. She now holds the magick of darkness within her, and slumbering as he is there is still danger in traveling with such a powerful companion. That danger arrives on the heels of torrential rain and whipping winds. A storm for the ages traps them in a remote town where the locals cast suspicious glances at them. They soon learn that other outsiders have come with demands for the ancient automata harbored within their metalus mines. One of the villagers, a young historian, takes a liking to them and offers them shelter in his tiny abode. There he regales them with tales of a mighty hero who protected the village many millennia ago. The other villagers ridicule his love of the past when their future is so perilous, but the historian assures them he has a plan. That plan involves Jane, and as the storm worsens and new foes arrive she finds herself caught in a web of lies and greed, a web in which she must break free, or die trying.
