DC Zander Ellery isn't sure which he dislikes the most: New partners, rookie female officers, or cases he can't solve. Right now he has all three. DC Isabel York is fresh out of uniform and out of the proverbial frying pan into the fire as her personal and professional lives clash with her first case-ten stolen works of art. When a postcard arrives addressed to Isabel with a cryptic message on it, it's just the beginning. The mystery deepens as the first of the stolen paintings is found alongside a dead body-bound and gagged and left posed in prayer at the place depicted in the postcard. Are nine more murders coming? Can Zander and Isabel find the missing paintings and solve the murder before another victim falls?

As the body count increases and more paintings are recovered, DC Zander Ellery and his partner DC Isabel York are under increasing pressure to catch the killer the press has dubbed the Prayer Slayer. A few tenuous links are all they have between the deaths of three young, pretty women. The new Chief Superintendent is only adding to the pressure and seems to be picking on Isabel more than any other officer. Torn between his urge to protect his partner and his need to solve the case, Zander sits his sergeant's exams, hoping once they are over, he won't be so distracted. But a rocky relationship with his girlfriend and one more murder only adds to his stress.

With trouble on the streets, DS Zander Ellery is under even more pressure to solve the case of the Prayer Slayer. His partner DC Isabel York is convinced she is being targeted, as all the postcards the Slayer sends are addressed only to her. With Zander and Isabel pulled in different directions, the body count escalates, until the case explodes in a direction no one could foresee-Something that will test everyone to the limits of their experience and faith.

Just when things couldn't get much worse, they suddenly do. With DS Zander Ellery in jail, his partner DC Isabel York fights to clear his name. Not an easy task when she is suspended from duty and the evidence against him is compelling. Finally, pieces begin to fall into place, but to catch the Prayer Slayer once and for all, both officers must walk down a dark path where their very souls are at risk of being taken.

Receptionist Kate Dahlbeck accepts the final slot on reality TV show "Jack's House", and takes a leave of absence from her job to live in front of cameras, wired up to a microphone twenty-four hours a day. Despite the silly activities forced on the contestants, it's all fun and games...that is until one of them dies. Tired of desk duty while he recovers from injuries sustained in the line of duty, DS Zander Ellery is champing at the bit to investigate the suspicious death-from the inside. His partner DC Isabel York agrees to watch his back from the safety of the director's gallery in the studio. Zander packs the one bag he's allowed, and enters the house undercover. It doesn't take him long to work out the sinister link between housemates, but proving which one is a killer isn't easy. They're all hiding something, including Kate. Time is short. Can Zander catch the culprit before he-or she-strikes again? And will his growing attraction for the seemingly innocent Kate cloud his judgement or will he be carrying her off to the nick before the show's final wrap?

It' s Christmas and DS Zander Ellery is buried in work. He' s tried hard to put the events of Jack' s House, an undercover operation, behind him, yet his thoughts keep returning to Kate. She promised to keep in touch, and she hasn' t. Kate Dahlbeck left town after the events of Jack' s House. With her past exposed, no home and no job, she fled to her brother to work for him. Now she' s up to her neck in trouble, on the run and can only think of one person to help. Zander with a zed. Zander and his partner, DC Isabel York, agree to help. It doesn' t take much investigating before Zander understands that Kate' s situation is far worse, far messier, and far more dangerous than he first realized.

The Headley Cross marathon has been held every year since it was founded in 1983. This time, as well as the full run, a half marathon is being offered, and preparations are well under way. DS Zander Ellery and DC Isabel York have a hectic caseload and could well do without the squad having to run the marathon. When the race is threatened, they and the other members of the MIU/Major Crimes are tasked with neutralizing the threat. As the day of the race draws near, with ten thousand runners due to take to the streets, time to find the culprit is running out. Lives are at stake, and Ellery and York must succeed in winning this race.

As the town reels from a bombing, the death toll rises. The search begins for those responsible. Every officer involved in the pursuit is either injured or negatively affected. DS Zander Ellery must assume command of the cross-county task force and lead the hunt. Seriously injured, DC Isabel York, must fight for her place on the squad rather than the hospital bed she should actually occupy. Both she and Zander are coping with personal losses, which makes it difficult to stay detached and professional. Time is running out as everything comes tumbling down around them. Can they catch those responsible, before it' s too late?
