The Fifth Ring
by Jeri Massi
Part 2 of the Cosmos series
Doc Thorson is being goaded into a meeting with a new enemy. He and his old adversary, Theskulis, team up to defeat a common foe who has threatened to dine on Doc Thorson. Jack Derwood, high school student with an unusual gift for languages, lends a hand. They are also helped by the unlikely heroine of cosmic detective fiction: the irrepressible Mags Hardbottle, Detective to the Stars! And now she is joined by Kogrik, her seven foot tall and trusty sidekick!Doc knows he is being lured into a trap: the dreaded Fifth Ring. Yet he has to go: his mysterious enemy, who has openly claimed that he will dine on Doc, has also harnessed the power of cosmic travel. The two adventurers, Doc and Theskulis, must join forces, along with their motley crew of helpers, and discover the lair of this brilliant, savage, and voracious enemy. After the harrowing events of 9/11, Jeri Massi did some soul searching and realized that she needed to live a more authentic, charitable, concerned Christian life. Already familiar with two cases of the abuse of children in Christian Fundamentalism, she decided to research and document cases in order to keep the sacred lives of these children public, so that their stories could not be hidden by the pastors in power in Fundamentalism. A graduate of Bob Jones University, she undertook reasearch of the structure on Christian Fundamentalism, its history, and other abuse cases that were hidden away in the back rooms of churches. At first naively thinking she might find as many as half a dozen cases, she soon realized that there surely were dozens of abuse cases in these churches, then as she continued to uncover cases, hundreds. After thirteen years of documenting cases, interviewing victims, and confronting pastors, she realized that sexually abusing children is as much a part of the church culture of Christian Fundamentalism as baptism by immersion and Wednesday night church suppers.

Doc and Scruggs Grady team up with the galaxy's premier detective, Mags Hardbottle, to locate Jean in time. It's another comedy-adventure romp through the cosmos, but with a touch of heaven, as Jean encounters some of the true citizens of the cosmos in her adventures."The way you mix laugh-out-loud adventure with that deeper, spiritual heartbeat is something really special. It feels like Narnia collided with Hitchhiker's Guide, but with your own brilliant spark."
