Fourteen-year-old Gojyo Sha and his best friend, Hakkai Cho, are on a road trip to New York City-driven by Gojyo's 18-year-old half-brother, Jin. But the trip isn't just about sightseeing. They're visiting Jin's biological mother, who has been living in a mental hospital ever since a tragic night that changed everything.
Gojyo's life began in the shadow of heartbreak-his mother was the mistress of Jin's father, and both of Gojyo's parents died in a joint suicide the night he was born. Though Gojyo and Jin don't share the same mother, Jin stepped in as a protector and loving older brother, especially when Gojyo was too scared to use the bathroom alone or when he had accidents. Jin never blamed him-he knew it wasn't Gojyo's fault.
Now, as they travel together, Gojyo keeps a painful secret: he still struggles with a shy bladder and carries deep emotional wounds from years of bullying and rejection by family members. But through it all, Jin remains his anchor-the one person who sees him, protects him, and understands.
Our Trip to New York is a raw and emotional coming-of-age story about trauma, shame, mental illness, and the healing power of unconditional love.
