The Collected Works of Spinoza, Volume I
by Benedictus de Spinoza
Part 1 of the Collected Works of Spinoza series
Edwin Curley is professor emeritus of philosophy at the University of Michigan. His books include A Spinoza Reader, Behind the Geometrical Method: A Reading of Spinoza's "Ethics," and Spinoza's Metaphysics. He is also the author of Descartes Against the Skeptics and the editor of an edition of Hobbes's Leviathan. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
The Collected Works of Spinoza provides, for the first time in English, a truly satisfactory edition of all of Spinoza's writings, with accurate and readable translations, based on the best critical editions of the original-language texts, done by a scholar who has published extensively on the philosopher's work.
This first volume contains Spinoza's single most important work, the Ethics, and four earlier works: the Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect, the Short Treatise on God, Man, and His Well-Being, Descartes' "Principles of Philosophy," and Metaphysical Thoughts. Also included are Spinoza's letters from the periods when these works were being written.
The elaborate editorial apparatus-including prefaces, notes, glossary, and indexes-assists the reader in understanding one of the world's most fascinating, but also most difficult, philosophers. Of particular interest is the glossary-index, which provides extensive commentary on Spinoza's technical vocabulary.
A milestone of scholarship more than forty-five years in the making, The Collected Works of Spinoza is an essential edition for anyone with a serious interest in Spinoza or the history of philosophy. "A major contribution to Spinoza scholarship . . . sets a new standard."---Daniel E. Garber, Ethics "This wonderful volume is as much an edition as it is a translation. . . . [Curley's] renderings bring one much closer to what Spinoza actually wrote than do those of any previous translator of Spinoza into English. . . . Curley's volume will stand alone for the foreseeable future; indeed, it is hard to imagine anything ever supplanting it as the chief Spinoza research tool for Anglophones."---Jonathan Bennett, Philosophical Review "Curley's translation surpasses all of the others in accuracy and reliability."---H. G. Hubbeling, Journal of the History of Philosophy "Curley succeeds on all counts in this invaluable aid to an understanding of an important, but difficult, rationalist philosopher."---Leon H. Brody, Library Journal "A standard and trusted tool of Spinoza scholarship in the English-speaking world."---John Cottingham, Times Higher Education Supplement "Curley's edition has been compiled with great care, thoroughness, and skill. We now have, at long last, the first part of a superb English edition of Spinoza's writings, with reliable, uniform translations and an extremely useful scholarly apparatus. All of this makes Curley's edition indispensable to students of Spinoza and modern philosophy."---James C. Morrison, Canadian Philosophical Reviews "Far more than a fresh translation. . . . [A] model of the translator-editor's art."---B. A. Gerrish, Journal of Religion "Curley's annotated translation of Spinoza is a great scholarly achievement that will set a standard for the field."-Margaret D. Wilson, Princeton University "Curley has put all historians of modern philosophy deeply in his debt with the first volume of The Collected Works of Spinoza."-Maurice Mandelbaum, Johns Hopkins University "This work is a superb scholarly translation of Spinoza, which also puts at our disposal the necessary aids for introducing his writings and treating problems concerning text and doctrine. The work gives us the long-awaited instrument for studying Spinoza in the English language and with the assistance of recent Spinoza scholarship."-James Collins, St. Louis University "Our grip on Spinoza's texts can now be firmer than it ever could before, thanks to Curley's translation and to his editorial apparatus. Both are indispensable for serious scholarly work on Spinoza, even by thos

Part 2 of the Collected Works of Spinoza series
"One of The Times Literary Supplement's Books of the Year 2016, chosen by Clare Carlisle" Edwin Curley is professor emeritus of philosophy at the University of Michigan.
The second and final volume of the most authoritative English-language edition of Spinoza's writings
The Collected Works of Spinoza provides, for the first time in English, a truly satisfactory edition of all of Spinoza's writings, with accurate and readable translations, based on the best critical editions of the original-language texts, done by a scholar who has published extensively on the philosopher's work.
The centerpiece of this second volume is Spinoza's Theological-Political Treatise, a landmark work in the history of biblical scholarship, the first argument for democracy by a major philosopher, and a forceful defense of freedom of thought and expression. This work is accompanied by Spinoza's later correspondence, much of which responds to criticism of the Theological-Political Treatise. The volume also includes his last work, the unfinished Political Treatise, which builds on the foundations of the Theological-Political Treatise to offer plans for the organization of nontyrannical monarchies and aristocracies.
"The Collected Works of Spinoza has been the labour of a lifetime, and it provides us with a fluent, meticulous, consistent and usefully annotated English version of everything Spinoza wrote (except the Hebrew grammar), and a fresh opportunity to see his arguments in detail and to see them whole."---Jonathan Rée, London Review of Books "A magnificent achievement and a beautiful companion to the first volume. This edition will last--I'm hesitant to say forever--but it's hard for me to see how it will ever be surpassed." "A monument to scholarship [which] promises to inspire new research in the field. . . . Other good translations of these works now exist, but they do not compare to the depth or importance of the scholarly apparatus that accompanies this one. . . . For this volume, and all that Edwin Curley has brought to Spinoza scholarship, we should be grateful."---Michael A. Rosenthal, Journal of the History of Philosophy "[A] major and brilliantly executed editorial project. . . . Terrific."---Wiep van Bunge, Renaissance Quarterly "With this volume, Edwin Curley completes his ambitious project to make Spinoza's difficult thought accessible to an English-speaking audience. Curley's edition sets a very high standard, not only for translation, but for scholarly editions of every kind. His translations are both philosophically astute and readable, while his notes inform the reader of the latest results of textual scholarship. Furthermore, his multilingual glossary-index is an invaluable guide to Spinoza's often idiosyncratic vocabulary. This is an edition of Spinoza for the ages: students and scholars will be reading Curley's Spinoza for many years to come."-Daniel Garber, Princeton University "This is not just an extraordinarily important and beautifully rendered translation, but a magisterial work of scholarship. The long-awaited second volume, which includes the political writings and later letters, is especially welcome.
