Grimm Afelnor, the youngest Mage Questor in Arnor House, has sworn to expunge the stain from his reviled family name. Grimm's arduous first Quest with his best friend, Dalquist, seems simple enough at first: to retrieve a magical gem from a magic-using Baron. Along the way, Grimm has to kill a man, destroy a demon, conquer unwitting drug addiction and break free of magical infatuation cast by a young witch-nun. Grimm regards the wealth and title of Baron as more than ample recompense for his pains, but even more good fortune comes his way, when, soon afterwards, he becomes a Fifth Rank Mage Questor, due to a clerical oversight. Life for the young mage seems to be going his way. With a scaly titan, a mighty albino swordsman, an elven thief and a six-inch imp amongst his allies, and Grimm feels confident when ordered to assist in tackling a renegade General who seems to be abducting Guild Mages. His only problems are: the prejudiced and domineering senior mage, Questor Xylox; a young female pickpocket; and a mysterious, insidious sickness lurking in the Shest Mountains.

Mage Questor Grimm Afelnor and his companions find themselves in Haven, a steel fortress in the forbidding Shest Mountains, as the unwilling guests of Armitage, the reborn avatar of a long-dead Technologist, who holds ancient techniques of mental control. After being forced to fight a magical duel, Grimm and his nemesis, Questor Xylox, break free and battle the hellish array of Technological devices at Armitage's command. However, even defeating Armitage and his minions is not the end: a traitor lurks within Haven's ranks, an envious man with his own megalomaniacal agenda... Grimm and his companions then face a grueling trek through a scorching desert before taking on a mighty army headed by the feared but charismatic General Q. Opposed by hordes of troops with metal weapons, several fanatically loyal if enslaved Guild Mages, and an equally dedicated Technologist, can even two potent Weapons of the Guild prevail?

After saving Lord Dominie Horin from the attentions of the evil and powerful witch, Prioress Lizaveta, Mage Questor Grimm Afelnor finds himself elevated to the Seventh Rank and the head of a secret Quest to eliminate the influence of her pernicious cult. The mission becomes difficult as Grimm finds his magical aides are a sarcastic dandy (who happens to be Lizaveta's resentful grandson) and a cowardly Necromancer (who would prefer to sing than cast magic). The difficulties compound themselves as Grimm finds himself in an unwitting mental struggle for supremacy with the man he trusts above all others. After being freed by a mutiny about which he knows nothing, all Grimm has to do is destroy a gladiatorial slavemaster and a ruthless businessman after battling hundreds of mindless fighting drones trained to the peak of physical perfection. And the Quest has only just begun.

As Mage Questor Grimm Afelnor continues his Quest to destroy the pernicious influence of the witch-nun, Lizaveta, he has no idea that the evil Prioress' inner coterie has abducted his secret lover, Drexelica. While Drex fights to retain her individuality in the face of relentless, savage torment, Grimm has to face troubles of his own, including the sullen opposition of the unpredictable Questor, Guy Great Flame. When the members of Grimm's party find themselves marked for sacrifice and imprisoned in a fortress immune to even Questor magic, the young mage has to consider highly unorthodox tactics in order to survive.
