Broken Soldier
by Bruce George
Part 1 of the Broken Soldier series
Saving the human race proves to be far more difficult than he could ever have imagined. Mike Hurst, a former Army Sergeant, is thrust into a role that should be handled by someone use to dealing with major military organizations and politicians. His new alien friend, Jonelle, is certain that he is more than capable, especially after he is upgraded with some very unique abilities. He is now able to communicate to other upgraded people, without speaking; and his mind can handle hundreds of complicated tasks simultaneously. Also, there is a great deal of self confidence to be had by possessing three times the strength of a normal human being.Mike knows that he must recruit good people. Jonelle urges him to pursue other old combat vets, who will be upgraded and brought into the warrior class. But Mike realizes, while that is important, perhaps of greater impact would be the recruitment of senior military leaders, such as an old General, whom he hated. He begins to build a staff, by kidnapping the old General, as well as one of his men from Iraq and his badly injured son and daughter-in-law. They would form the first members of his staff. Yet, in spite of small, awkward successes, he fears their progress is far too slow and nothing mankind can do will prevent the complete destruction of the human race. I have been a long time reader of science fiction, military fiction, the occasional mystery and historical novels. I began reading amateur stories and was amazed at what could pass for an articulate and cohesive tale. So, I decided to give it a shot. I have been writing for years, but never published any of it. The first book, in my Broken Soldier series, had been rolling around in my mind for a few years. Once I began to put it together I realized I had an interesting tale; just the kind that I enjoy reading. I hope you enjoy the series, as much as I enjoy writing it.If you wish to compliment me, or rip me to shreds, I can be reached at my e-mail address of brucegeorge02@gmail.com. I gladly respond to all who wish a private communication. A disabled veteran is kidnapped by an alien being who uses advanced medical technology to repair his injured body. As he is recovering, the alien informs him that the people of Earth are in jeopardy of being destroyed by a race of brutal creatures and that he could be the man to lead the people of Earth in defending their planet.

Part 2 of the Broken Soldier series
Being a genetically modified human being has its benefits and Mike Hurst was just beginning to appreciate all that it entailed. His mind worked with amazing speed and he could handle dozens of mental tasks simultaneously. Then there was his newly enhanced strength; three times that of a normal human. But best of all was the youthful body that had been regenerated for him. He was a seventy one year old disabled amputee veteran, when he had been kidnapped and upgraded to his current twenty five year old body.Yet, having all of this incredible ability didn't make him smarter, or wiser. Many of the people he needed to convince to help him save the human race were more interested in how they could use this new technology for their own selfish goals. Fortunately not everyone was in this category. Also, he wasn't the sort of man to surfer fools lightly. He knew he would have to wield a heavy hand, in order to make them see the error of their ways and to work with him for the good of the planet. He would prepare to do battle with the alien ship headed his way and wage a battle to help build the resources of the Earth, without the hindrance of bureaucratic interference. Glimmer of Hope

Part 3 of the Broken Soldier series
Mike Hurst could care less about the petty squabbling that had existed for several millennia on Earth. If humans didn't get their act together, there would be no people left to benefit from conquering another nation. Unfortunately, too many nations didn't see it that way. With the prospects of improved health, extended life and new powerful weapons, any country could become the dominant force on the planet, if they gained control of these new abilities. That's why Mike had implemented strict guidelines for joining the Free Earth Alliance. If a country wanted access to these marvelous items, they had to agree to support the Terran Space Navy. Initially, no country wanted to acknowledge the TSN as a sovereign entity and Mike understood that. When they raised hell about it, he accepted their reluctance to go along with his plans for the defense of the solar system, although he never backed down from his stance, regarding TSN independence. His love for Physicist Bet Fulwiler, who was one of the kidnapped victims, dominated his thoughts and prevented him from focusing on other important events. He badly wanted to be on the rescue team, but there was no way for him to return to Earth, in time to join them. The rescue would be handled by Commander Frank Vollmar, the man who was now the head of a fast reaction team on Earth. In spite of interference on a number of fronts, TSN progress was being made. The men and women he had recruited were sharp and loyal to the him and they understood the reason behind his insistence on avoiding involvement in Earth's political turmoil. If only it was that easy. In order to make additional headway, some TSN intrusion was essential, although he hated it. He saw the necessity for pushing events in a direction that would strengthen the TSN and make it a strong progressive force in outer space. That's why Frank Vollmar's team was such an important ingredient for the TSN. They would be the hammer for the TSN. When someone threatened any element of the mission to defend the planet, Vollmar's men went into action.Ever present in Mike's thoughts, was his concern about the arrival of another alien ship. They knew approximately when it would arrive and he intended to capture it and learn more about his enemy in the process. There was little doubt that there would be casualties. The End of the Beginning

Part 4 of the Broken Soldier series
The American and Chinese Presidents were missing and presumably being held by the people behind the attempted world coup. General Mike Hurst knew the Russian President must be behind it, because he was seen everywhere, on TV, the radio and the Internet, claiming to bring a new world order. He was amazed by the huge numbers of shuttles and fighters headed toward the TSN asteroid, Fort Defiance. Overall, the TSN had enough forces to deal them. But those forces were spread around, in space and on Earth. So, Fort Defiance and the space craft stationed there would be the only available means to prevent the Russians from grabbing the base and the alien hardware housed inside. On the Earth, the Chinese were about to invade Australia and possibly New Zealand. The Russians had moved forces to Argentina and were preparing to go after England's alien hardware being built there. The location of the rogue Senator Kingston had been discovered and Mike was on his way to apprehend him. Kingston was a partner in crime with Russian President Spolnikova. He had been planning this for some time and if Mike couldn't stop him and Spolnikova, the alien equipment would be taken over by a cabal of miscreants. If these human enemies succeeded, Mike knew the human race was doomed. The Anguish of Victory

Part 5 of the Broken Soldier series
As they progressed deeper into the corvette, the gravity suddenly increased to twice that of Sauran standard. Because the men regularly practiced for that possibility, they weren't caught off as badly as the Saurans had hoped. As soon as the heavy gravity hit, fifty Saurans came running down the passageway, firing as they charged. The heavies returned fire, taking out the initial ranks of enemy warriors. The seals came charging forward, just in time, as the Saurans closed within hand to hand range. That's when the seals introduced the enemy to another new weapon they carried, a powerful hand held pistol. It only had fifteen shots; but it was easy to aim and fire in very close quarters. Every time it did, a Sauran lost an eye, or a hand and sometimes, their entire head. That engagement lasted more than five minutes. Total casualties were now at eight percent, which was higher than they had anticipated this early in the battle. At ten percent, Apok was supposed to call for additional troops to come in, but he wasn't going to wait that long. His call went out, but he heard no response. Friends in Need

Part 6 of the Broken Soldier series
Lady luck has been good to humankind. But, she can be a fickle mistress. While human successes have been encouraging, great losses are also part of the equation and must be accepted. Contact with the Januki offers hope for more knowledge and technical support, although the friendly aliens are not in a position to provide ships and warriors to fight against the dreaded Saurans. But, humans will soon have the combat numbers to aid the Januki, making them an attractive ally, if the friendly race can just overlook some problems with the way humans are going about their business. In the meantime, Adm. Wayne Hurst is about to send out the first Task Force to disrupt Sauran efforts in this part of the Galactic Arm. However, his chosen commander has a problem and it must be resolved before they head out from his secret base of operations. Despite all the difficulties, humans continue to make progress in developing their own space navy, albeit at a snail's pace.
