English Language Teaching in South America
Policy, Preparation and Practices
by Various Authors
Part of the Bilingual Education & Bilingualism series
This book investigates new English language policies and initiatives which have been introduced and implemented across Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay and Venezuela. Chapters are organized around three themes. Chapters in the first section critically examine newly-implemented English language policies, as well as factors that contribute to and prevent the implementation of such policies. Chapters in the second section describe and analyze current teacher preparation and teacher development initiatives, in addition to the challenges and opportunities associated with such initiatives. Finally, the third section features school- and classroom-based research designed to investigate the status of English language teaching and the implementation of innovative programs. All authors have a first-hand understanding of the South American context and draw on references and resources which originate beyond Inner Circle countries. The book showcases examples of innovation and success in a variety of complex contexts and will serve as a starting point for researchers, as well as being of interest to students, policymakers and stakeholders.

Policy and Practice for Multilingual Educational Settings
Comparisons across Contexts
by Various Authors
Part of the Bilingual Education & Bilingualism series
Exploring multilingualism as a complex, context-related, societal, and individual phenomenon, this book centres around perspectives on how multiple languages are made (in)visible within educational settings in the Global North. The authors of each chapter compare and contrast findings across geographical contexts with the goal of understanding the facets of multilingualism that, on the one hand, conform across contexts, and on the other, diverge context-specifically. The chapters range from contributions with a focus on national/state planning for the development of sustainable multilingual and intercultural educational policies, to chapters that deal with multilingual practices and identities of students and student teachers as well as the consequences for language practices, strategies, and policies in diversifying societies. This cross-contextual, comparative, and interdisciplinary exploration of multilingualism will be of great interest to researchers, administrators, practitioners, and students within the fields of multilingual education, sociolinguistics, youth culture and identity studies. The book is open access under a CC BY NC, ND license.
