Finding a husband is serious business. And serious business requires serious planning. Charity Raber is one of many single women who came to Birch Creek, Ohio, with one goal in mind: secure a husband from among the desperate bachelors a newspaper advertisement claimed inhabited the town. Even though that claim proved to be nothing more than a cruel prank, Charity is still hopeful that her happy ending might be within reach when she's set up on a date with Jesse Bontrager. That is until Jesse not-so-gently shares that he has no interest in a relationship with anyone, and especially not with her. One year later, Charity is working as a caretaker for a kind, elderly English woman in the nearby town of Marigold. She's also working hard on a brand-new courtship plan. He needs help, and he's willing to hire anyone except pushy Ella Yoder. Outspoken and feisty, Ella's personality is completely opposite from her subdued family, and most everyone in the small town of Marigold, Ohio, including Nelson. But she knows exactly how to organize and promote his business... if he'd only give her a chance. When he finally does, they disagree on almost everything, but he quickly realizes that because of her input, the deli is the most popular business in the community. With his business future secured, Nelson is missing two things, a wife and a family. Having had her own romantic woes, Ella has decided to remain single and isn't shy about letting everyone know. When Nelson asks her to help him find a prospective wife-after all, she was right about his business-she agrees and begins to search for his perfect mate. Then the unthinkable happens, she falls for him just as he's fallen for the woman she set him up with. Or has he?

When he finally reaches the end of his patience with them, he moves to nearby Marigold to escape their relentless matchmaking. But when his brothers there set him up with Daisy Hershberger, he's desperate to end their interference. Daisy, who was left at the altar by her ex-fiancé, Reuel, is forced to move to Marigold by her overprotective parents, who want her to have a fresh start. But Daisy is still in love with Reuel and believes that if she becomes a better cook, housekeeper, gardener, and most importantly, smarter, then he will come back to her. When she's tricked into going out with Perry, she reveals her frustration with her family. She and Perry decide to help each other break free of their families' meddling ways. Their plan works, but when Perry finds out that Daisy is trying to change herself for someone who doesn't deserve her, his feelings start to change. The pact they entered starts to shift as they realize that long-held beliefs about themselves might not be as accurate as they once thought.
