This region includes portions of seven different physiographic provinces in eastern North America. A physiographic province is defined as a geographic region with a characteristic type of landscape and usually a different type of subsurface rock (e.g., sandstone or limestone). Both landscape and subsurface rock contribute to the development of what is often a distinctive type of vegetation. The Coastal Plain makes up the largest land area of the Southeast, extending from eastern Maryland southward to northern Florida and west to Louisiana. Virtually all of Louisiana and Mississippi, as well as major portions of southern and eastern Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, fall within this province. The Coastal Plain is characterized by a relatively flat landscape and sometimes poorly drained areas. The Piedmont is composed of more rolling hills than the Coastal Plain. The southern Appalachian Mountains occupy portions of nine states in the Southeast and include three physiographic provinces. Instead of returning to a summer job as a Denver postman, I remained in Seattle to try to teach a class on the natural history of butterflies. In the half-century since, I have taught hundreds of such classes, but back then the idea was a novel one; no one knew what to make of it. At the first class meeting, only one student showed up: a rising Garfield High School junior named Jonathan P. Pelham. It soon became apparent that Jon knew as much about butterflies as I did, and much more about the local species. I dropped the pretense of the class, got a job with the Sierra Club, and became instant field colleagues with Jon-a relationship we have now enjoyed for 50 years. Before long, we decided a Washington butterfly book was needed. Starting with Ben Leighton's 1946 checklist, and with the assistance of all the local collectors, we began the Northwest Lepidoptera Survey and a book project. Jon Shepard, then at the University of California at Berkeley, contributed his large set of records. Grant W. Sharpe, my postgraduate professor in the College of Forest Resources, enabled me to write an interpretive field guide to the state's butterflies as a master's thesis. Hazel Wolf and Earl Larrison paved the way for it to be published in Seattle Audubon Society's Trailside Series as Watching Washington Butterflies (WWB) in 1974. Jon Pelham became Curator of Lepidoptera at the Burke Museum and proceeded to build a superb reference collection and data base. Not only WWB but also my 1976 doctoral thesis on the ecogeography of Washington butterflies and Washington Butterfly Status Report and Conservation Plan (1989) owed a great deal to Pelham's data and review. Around 1978, a group of lepidopterists (Jon Pelham, Jon Shepard, John Hinchliff, Dave McCorkle, and I, and later Paul Hammond) came together as the Evergreen Aurelians, with a view toward expanding the Northwest Lepidoptera Survey by assembling records from scores of collectors, and through further field work. Oak-juniper-pine woodlands characterize the upper elevations of the sky islands. Grasslands and canyon lands sweep through the Panhandle, and, of course, wildflowers line the country roads in Central Texas. Texas is fortunate to have such floral diversity. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, it also offers a wide range of habitats for fauna. The scope of this book primarily covers herbaceous flowering angiosperms. Trees, shrubs, cacti, grasses, sedges, rushes, and nonflowering plants (ferns and fern allies) are not covered. Occasionally, a few woody vines are included as well as semiwoody species, such as plumed tiquilia (Tiquilia greggii), as they fall into a gray area called subshrubs. Because Texas covers a large area and consists of such a variety of habitats, every effort has been made to ensure equal representation throughout the ecoregions and geographic areas of Texas. Of course, some locales have more plant diversity, and thus have more species represented here. I have also endeavored to include a wide range of plant families, and within larger families, examples of each genus. For the sake of space, many species had to be omitted; just a quarter of the state's herbaceous and semiwoody angiosperms are included. Nonetheless, a conscious effort was made to incorporate species that have not been included in other field guides. Both native and introduced species are described, as all of these are now part of the region's flora. When Europeans arrived in the area now known as Texas, they brought plants for medicinal, aesthetic, and agricultural uses. Over time, these plants have escaped and naturalized. Other species were accidental introductions-unintentionally spread via seed mixes or other sources of contamination. New species continue to arrive, whether as garden escapees or seeds inadvertently spread through human activity. The majority of species included in this book are common plants that can be found throughout Texas-roadside wildflowers, if you will. Alpine explorers may have been surprised to stumble upon dwarf willows no taller than the toe of their boot.      Trees and shrubs are almost everywhere in the Northwest. Maybe we take them for granted. We know that we once did, lumping understory shrubs into one homogenous "boring shrub layer" while searching for wildflowers or barreling up a trail in pursuit of an alpine summit. But the reality is that there is a great deal of diversity among our trees and shrubs, thanks in large part to the wide range of growing conditions in the Northwest. A few species, like Douglas-fir, western serviceberry, chokecherry, and common snowberry, are found in almost every county or regional district. Others, like our two rockmats, are very narrow endemics found in only a few places. The Klamath-Siskiyou Range is home to more conifer species than almost any other similar-size chunk of geography in the world.      When we began the journey that resulted in this book, we knew there were a lot of trees and shrubs to cover. Some-particularly those of the North Cascades, where we live-were familiar friends to revisit on each hike. Others, like the willows, had a vague familiarity but were often passed over because they were challenging to learn. Neither of us started on this book knowing everything we would discover along the way.      It stands to reason that our largest trees grow where the most rain falls each season. It takes a lot of water to produce a coast redwood, Sitka spruce, western redcedar, or Douglas-fir. Go east of the mountains to the Columbia Plateau or the Great Basin and you'll find a landscape dominated by sagebrush, bitterbrush, rabbitbrush, and other small shrubs. In this arid part of the Northwest, what passes for old growth may be barely shoulder high.      Chaparral only touches the Northwest, with its northernmost examples just crossing the border from California into Oregon. As a plant ecologist at the New England Wild Flower Society in Framingham, Massachusetts, he conducted botanical inventories, natural community surveys, and invasive species control programs. Elliman worked as a contract ecologist for the National Park Service, and he has written numerous articles on botanical subjects for conservation organizations, scientific journals, and state and federal environmental agencies.  Founded in 1900 as the Society for the Protection of Native Plants, the Native Plant Trust is the nation's oldest plant conservation organization and a recognized leader in native plant conservation, horticulture, and education. The Society's headquarters, Garden in the Woods, is a renowned native plant botanic garden in Framingham, Massachusetts, that attracts visitors from all over the world. From this base, 25 staff and more than 700 volunteers work throughout New England to monitor and protect rare and endangered plants, collect and preserve seeds to ensure biological diversity, detect and control invasive species, conduct research, and offer a range of educational programs.  Introduction This field guide describes 1100 wildflowers and small flowering shrubs that occur in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont-the six New England states. Most of these plants are herbaceous, that is, they are species with conspicuous flowers whose stems die back in winter. Others are small, woody-stemmed shrubs, primarily those that grow no more than 3 feet in height and also have conspicuous flowers. Trees and large shrubs are not included; neither are grasses and grasslike plants, nor nonflowering plants such as ferns, horsetails, and club-mosses. The selected plants represent a high proportion of the region's flora that we think of as "wildflowers." Most grow in natural habitats-in the forests, meadows, wetlands, hills, mountains, valleys, and coastlines throughout the region. Others have found favored niches along roadsides, railway beds, and in pavement cracks. Many of them are common in the region and some are rare. A number of species are distributed throughout New England, while others are found only within a small area of a single state. Some grow only in particular conditions, such as an alpine meadow or sphagnum bog, while others flourish in a wide variety of habitats. Most of these wildflowers occur in other parts of the northeastern United States and in southeastern Canada as well as in New England. Only a few species are entirely limited to New England in their range. Plants that are native to New England and plants that are nonnative to the region are described. The common thread is that all of them grow in self-sustaining populations independent of human cultivation. A native species is one that has continuously grown in the northeastern landscape since before the time of European colonization. A nonnative or introduced plant has been brought here, accidentally or deliberately, from outside the region, and now grows here in natural conditions. Today, approximately two-thirds
