Like many, Lex McKilliam was a woman in search of a job. The one that came looking for her was like nothing she'd expected, however. Suddenly thrust into a world where everyone can do something a little beyond the ordinary, Lex makes new friends and works hard to improve her skills. The mystery behind the agency that recruited Lex and her new friends and the strange medical procedures they insist on begin to intrude on their lives further, until a surprise revelation lays bare the depth of the trap Lex and her friends have fallen into. Will they be able to save themselves the way they've saved so many others?

Although Lex and her friends escaped the shadowy company that wanted to use them as lab rats, she ends up having to fight for her life as the experimental drugs they gave her take effect. Upon her success in the fight, Lex returns to find herself changed. She and her friends flee DC and start a new life for themselves as traveling musicians, so that they can scout out a permanent home. This enables them to reconnect with old friends they'd thought lost forever, but as they become more successful, they come into conflict with people from their former profession. After gaining some breathing room, the group of friends plans for an escape that they hope will put them permanently out of harm's reach. Will they be successful, or will the labs be able to reclaim their lost property?

Lex and her friends are beginning to settle into their work with their new team in Brussels when a threat to Lex's life appears. Upon dealing with that, they find that MSI, the company behind the illegal human experimentation they escaped, has still been trying to interfere in their lives, so they try to prosecute the company's activities the International Criminal Court. Also, Lex and her new boyfriend, Rolf, work together to solve a string of bank burglaries, further their relationship, and go through the trial of meeting his family with a united front. Lex and her friends receive a warning of things to come when an old friend shows up on their doorstep, near death. Not long after they find themselves embroiled in fighting an extradition attempt - the US government, having taken over the human experimentation labs the friends escaped, seems to want them all back, to work as collectors for other escapees. Finally, unable to stop the extradition, Lex and her team go back to the US. Instead of taking in people for the labs, however, they choose to warn their would-be quarry instead and allow them to escape. This serves to anger the government, making Lex wonder if she and her friends will end up back in their labs instead...

Awaking in an island paradise, Lex comes to grips with the tenuous situation she and her friends are in - on the run, and branded as terrorists due to the actions her friends had to take to free her from being tortured in a government lab. As she recovers from her injuries, she helps some of the other former prisoners her friends freed get on their feet, as well. Getting to know them and their talents, Lex and her friends come up with some ideas to put themselves beyond the reach of the government searching for them forever. Now they only hope they can carry out their plans before they're recaptured...
