He had a new job. He had money for the first time. He thought about buying a car. Life was looking up. Then the meteor struck. The world changed and sixteen-year-old Nino Paschal had barely learned how the world operated before having to face it on his own. Nino didn't come from a happy home. His mother is an addict and gone for long periods. Her new boyfriend is a drunk and abusive. Street gangs wander his neighborhood. His future is bleak. He is determined not to let the cycle continue. To do that, he needs one thing, a job. He stumbles on a job at a hospital, lies about his age, and with the help of a woman he meets on the bus and the hospital's desperate need for help he is hired as a transporter. He can't believe his luck but needs to be careful around his mother's boyfriend who can smell money. Nino locates a secret spot in the subbasement of the hospital and takes up residence. All is well until the meteor strikes. With chaos and panic all around, Nino settles into his new home to wait the disaster out. Years later, out of food, he has a choice die of starvation or go outside and freeze to death. He chooses to face the frigid climate but what he discovers is beyond his wildest imagination.

Respected leader. Fierce warrior. Cosette Newland had attained her goal although she never expected it to be against an enemy force from off the planet Cosette has a situation. One she isn't sure she has the ability to solve. With a collapsed entry point to the cave, abducted personnel, and an alien ship hovering outside watching for anyone who emerges from the cave, all eyes turn to her for a solution. She has no idea why the aliens took her people and is positive she doesn't want to know, but she is determined to get them back. Utilizing a back entrance, Cosette leads a team on her own invasion to hunt and eliminate the alien force and rescue or recover her people. With their limited numbers and weapons that do little damage to the enemy, Cosette devises a daring plan to strike fast, rescue her people and flee, but even if she manages to pull off this suicidal endeavor, the aliens will just return and do more damage to the cave crushing them inside. She needs an edge when battling this enemy. She finds that edge in the most unlikely of places, strange creatures that inhabit the planet. Despite the new ally's assistance, they are still outnumbered, outgunned, and defending a cave that could be brought down on top of them.
