In the year 2020, a landslide off the English coast uncovers an alien escape pod that had crashed into a prehistoric swamp. The dormant AI awakens to a very different world it entered millennia previously. Now, it must utilize stored ancient patterning technology to reconstitute its Master. However, this proves no easy mission as it scours this strange new world for essential materials to rebuild its ship. As a homeless man, Zeke has worked hard to claim a back-alley as his own territory where a restaurants staff leave him food scraps. As if things arent bad enough Zekes escaped a dark Government agency. He has a partial metal skull, forged in the Middle East from a meteorite and hammered into shape by a backstreet blacksmith. Over time the strange alloy irreversibly bonded with his brain and is leaking into his DNA, changing it. Now the DARPA scientists want him back to find out why he's still alive. When the newly-revived Master discovers that the only source of an essential component for its ship is the foreign material in Zekes head, the alien faces a difficult moral dilemma. The Master comes from a species that reveres all biological life wherever it is found, and Zeke will die if the metal cap is removed. Its left to the AI to find another way?

Zeke's on the run from government scientists who want a piece of him; and now an alien wants him too, or more precisely the piece of exotic meteorite that's moulded to his skull. To get it the alien has to get Zeke to give it up, but knows the extraction will kill the human. Then there's the Nubl, an enemy artificial species who will eradicate all biological life on Earth. Time and space are running out for all of them.

Humanity has managed to develop its fledgling World Space Council, but it's still far from being effective and there are those who do not want it to succeed at all. Meanwhile, the alien AI, Pod, is the only thing standing between them and those intent on eradicating all biological sentience within the galaxy. It's almost too much for the tiny escape pod that has been left in charge of Earth's safety. So, while humans continue to war with each other over who should lead them into a future fraught with uncertainty and danger, the tiny AI attempts to ensure the eventual winner has something to defend Earth with. It doesn't help that the AI has been inadvertently damaged from the use of contaminated Alacite from it's adopted 'Maker', Zeke. As Pod explores its growing abilities, it finds that Zeke's thoughts on artificial sentience begin to gel with it's budding awareness. However, with everything that is happening Pod has no time to ponder its own existence when the 'real' action starts

Following on from The Pattern Ship, 'POD' the second book in the series, sees the newly sentient escape pod, accidentally enhanced by Zeke's transformed Alacite, continue to develop as an individual. Despite Zirkos and Ship remaining missing, the tiny AI continues to try and follow their instructions to assist the humans develop their technology. As the power struggle between Fortress and Space Island continues on Earth POD decides to await the outcome; concentrating instead on preparations to take on the real enemy, the Nubl.
