Shell Game
by M. J. Blehart
Part 6 of the Forgotten Fodder series
Three shells. One rat. With one chance to win and two to lose, which do you choose? Thanks to the turncoat's gambit, the investigation has forced the CBI team to split up. After witnessing the birth of a potential new conspiracy, Onima and Jace are stuck at AECC headquarters while Kara and a small team are trapped at a distant station on the other side of the Confederation. All of them are up against politicians and uber-wealthy businesspeople, some of whom seem to be doing illicit things to get even more obscenely rich. Worse, they're using clones as scapegoats for further distractions and misdirection. As the team works to understand the situation, they find more questions than answers, another Bureau team with a seemingly indifferent work ethic, and have more than one near-fatal encounter. If they fail, it could mean a breakdown of the Confederation, the economy, and throw the galaxy into chaos. Can they keep clonekind, the CBI, and the Confederation out of the crosshairs? To win this game, the team is going to need to turn over every shell. MJ BLEHART has been writing fantasy and sci-fi/space opera all his life, the first when he was nine years old. Star Wars and Star Trek were some of the biggest influences in his youth. He is a history aficionado. MJ has been a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA - a medieval re-enactment society) for over thirty years. As part of the SCA he studies and teaches 16th century rapier combat (fencing) and court heraldry, enjoys archery, and spending time with friends. When not writing sci-fi and fantasy, MJ blogs regularly, exploring mindfulness and creating an amazing life. He strives to live a kickass life and consciously create his reality (and sharing that process to help others do the same).MJ lives in New Jersey just outside of Philadelphia with his wife and their three feline overlords. After humanity colonized worlds away from Earth, three governments were formed. When two of them went to war, they created clones to do battle. After twenty years of war, the third government (and some non-human allies) intervened and ended the war by removing the other two governments.
A new single government has oversight over all the colonies. But the clones have been abandoned, neglected, and while banned on some worlds - on others they live in slums and have become an underclass.
In 2572, ten years after the war, tens of thousands of clones continue existing. But some have been mysteriously dying from a virus - but as they have no rights there is no formal investigation into this.
But then, a murder exposes a conspiracy that intends to use the clones again. The forgotten fodder may still have an impact on the human race far beyond the intent of their creation.
