This book describes the Empath as an Enneagram Archetype, or Type Four. Also covered are other common Empaths, including the Empathic Hero, the Sensitive Scientist, and the Giving Persona. Elaine describes how to use shamanic techniques to move past fears and blocks around creativity, and how Empaths need more self-care than others. She also describes the typical relationship Empaths tend to have with their parents, and how Empaths can move past that old programming so they create the relationships they desire.

The Empath and Shadow Work is the fourth in the series, Empath as Archetype, in which Elaine describes Shadow Work, or the study of discovering those parts of ourselves that are hidden, and how those Shadow parts create unhappy outcomes in our lives. More specifically, this book discusses the Mother Wound, which leads to the Empath's tendency to idealize others, and how to heal this pattern so the Empath does not destroy her relationships. Elaine also describes the reverse role of the Empath being idealized, and how the outcome can be very painful and confusing for the Empath as the Enneagram Type Four.

The Empath and the Fan-Hero Family System

The Empath, or highly sensitive, artistic, intuitive person, wants bonded, happy family relationships, a soul mate partnership, and a career involving her creativity. Yet many times the Empath becomes caught in an unhealthy family system or group and is unable to have enough energy for herself to achieve her dreams.
This book describes the Empath as the Enneagram Type Four in relationship to the Fan, the Enneagram Type Six, and the Hero, the Enneagram Type Three. The Fan-Hero Family System is a common, stable dynamic. However, Empaths can lose themselves within such a system when the Fans and Heroes concentrate on the image of Family rather than the reality of relationships within the Family. Empaths attempting to break free of such families can become confused and disillusioned. Included are examples of interactions between Types and their typical Shadows in such families.
