When Clue Forester leaves Eris Space Station behind to live on a distant Earth settlement on the planet Cassini, she discovers a new reality of troublesome mononoke, beautiful ocean spirits, and vengeful demons who attempt to use her for their own purposes. However, a powerful Okami rules the city of Scorpius and may be Clue's only hope if she is to survive long enough to uncover the mystery of her uncle's demise.

With the onset of winter, trouble arrives in Scorpius when cargo ships and their crews begin mysteriously vanishing. When Clue learns that among the missing is the boyfriend of her heartbroken new friend, she promises to help find him. However, Clue's search embroils her in danger from gangsters, pirates, and sea monsters. Is Kiyohime behind the sunken cargo ships and drowned crews or is there something more nefarious lurking beneath Cassini's oceans? Will Clue solve the case before she loses more than just her new home?

When the mononoke become more stirred up than usual, Clue becomes suspicious. Checking out the disappearance of a little boy's cat uncovers a disturbance in the spirit realm. Something has the mononoke terrified, and they aren't the only spirits at unrest. The Kodama, tree spirits, are tormenting not only a friendly neighborhood spider demon, but also Hibagon, one of Cassini's native bigfoot. Unfortunately, the powerful Okami shifter pack refuses to come to the aid of demons, leaving Clue to solve the mystery all alone or to seek out Liam, a serpent demon, who craves her and enjoys feeding on her fear. Determined to do the right thing at any cost, Clue may be forced to pay a price she can't afford.
