A promising Light Enchanter needs a mentor, and a disgruntled sorcerer banned from the Academy needs a way back. Haunted by powerful dreams of Light during the dark winter months, Reddix struggles to secure a paying job before she turns sixteen. Living under the oppressive roof of her scheming siblings, the only thing she can hold onto is her hope. Her curiosity to explore what seems to be trapped within her leads to a fateful encounter with a mysterious tradesman. When he sells her a promising stone, a hidden path toward becoming a Light Enchanter begins to unfold. However, crafting Light Enchantments will soon be the least of her challenges as she discovers a connection to a raw and dangerous force that mirrors the power wielded by the kingdom's most formidable enemy. As she unravels the mysteries of the shadows and learns to harness their true potential, she must also confront the truth of her own identity.

Reddix has managed to hide her new skill with shadows, but a force within is threatening to break free. Perhaps now that she has mastered Light, it has come time for her to do the same with her darkness. Meanwhile, Hamlin is growing more tired of the "hero tale" that the nitwits of the Academy like to tell about the looming war. The itch to search for the truth will soon lead him to new adventures and absurdly painful discoveries. Whether he wants it or not, he will unravel all the threads behind the place he's decided to serve-a decision that reeks more like a dead rat with each passing day.
