Beneath the Willow Tree is a poignant Young Adult novel that explores the devastating cycle of intergenerational trauma and the fierce resilience of sisterhood. The story follows three sisters-Kelsi, Alexis, and Maya-who are left in the care of their stern, often cold grandparents while their mother, Cassandra, spirals through addiction and incarceration. The family is haunted by a dark past that no one speaks of, a silence that allows a new cycle of abuse to begin when the girls' grandfather begins targeting Alexis. As Kelsi navigates the typical pressures of adolescence, she faces her own heartbreaks: a betrayal by a boy she trusted, a teen pregnancy, and a violent confrontation with her grandmother that results in a tragic miscarriage. These layers of trauma push the sisters to a breaking point. The arrival of their father, newly released and desperate to make amends, offers a flicker of hope. During a visit to a dying Cassandra in prison, a long-buried secret is revealed: Cassandra was a victim of the same man now harming her daughters. Armed with this truth, Kelsi and Alexis decide to break the silence. The tension culminates in a violent reckoning. Their father's sister, Kevin, intervenes to protect the girls, leading to a bloody confrontation where the grandparents are finally held accountable for their crimes. Though the family suffers the ultimate loss with Cassandra's tragic passing in prison, the sisters are finally freed from their house of shadows. A year later, the sisters have begun the long journey of healing. Supported by their father and living in a home built on safety rather than secrets, they find that while their past is shattered, their future is finally theirs to write.
