For six months, Mercy has been conducting a flawless, silent relationship with John.John, the senior analyst from Accounting, is Mercy's definition of corporate perfection: reserved, impeccably tailored, and possessing a permanent air of brooding sophistication that suggests he harbors deep, romantic secrets. From the safety of her meticulously organized desk, Mercy has cataloged every subtle detail-the way he favors black coffee, the effortless efficiency of his stride, the quiet, focused power of a man who clearly uses the gym and reads classic literature. He is The Ideal.Mercy's solitary fantasy, however, is about to be violently interrupted by the mandatory annual "Synergy Survival Scramble"-a three-day, no-tech corporate retreat in the damp, unforgiving wilderness of upstate New York. When the teams are announced, Mercy's world short-circuits: she is paired with John. The man who steps off the bus is not the John she knows. This John is wearing a neon orange parka, has packed six cans of instant tuna, and immediately trips over a tree root while loudly lamenting the lack of strong Wi-Fi.In the wild, John is not brooding; he is aggressively cheerful, utterly terrified of nature, and possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of 1980s wrestling history. He is a walking disaster who can't tie a knot, refuses to eat anything that isn't packaged, and communicates exclusively in terrible dad jokes. As Mercy struggles to keep their survival score above zero-much to the competitive derision of Paul, the aggressively macho team leader-she is forced to face a terrifying realization: she has fallen in love with a ghost.Meanwhile, John, oblivious to Mercy's internal crisis, is having the time of his life, enthusiastically trying (and failing) to build a shelter out of moss. While her colleague Jane watches the escalating chaos with amused detachment, Mercy must navigate muddy terrain, passive-aggressive corporate challenges, and a man who is the complete, chaotic antithesis of her carefully constructed dream. The closer she gets to the real John, the further she gets from the fantasy. As the weekend descends into hilarious, humiliating chaos, Mercy must decide if she is willing to dismantle her perfect image of love, or if the messy, utterly imperfect reality of John is just too much reality for a quiet office crush.
