Lord Norland's Squire, Fellan Orleff has been sent to find out what is happening at the distant Upfell farm.
Fellan discovers a disturbing situation and meets Carasheen Rankelled, the farmer's daughter. The pair are mutually attracted, but while able to instigate the solution to the farm's problems they find their personal commitments make a relationship seem impossible
