Stuart Macintyre, now a professor of history at the University of Melbourne and well-known author, participated in the radicalism of the 1960s and so writes here with an appreciation of the drama and pathos expressed in the history of a changing group of people and an institution which mounted an uncompromising challenge to the existing forms of national life.
