From the ALA YALSA Award-winning author and multi-award-winning filmmaker Kailin Gow comes...Phantom Diaries! What happens to the Phantom after the tragedy at the Paris Opera House is the basis for this fantastic tale of The Phantom Diaries, loosely based on Gaston Leroux's classic, The Phantom of the Opera, but with a new tale and a modern twist. This new series for older teens and young adults is told through the eyes of 18 year-old Annette Binoche, who lands a job at the New York Metropolitan Opera House as a seamstress' assistant only to become the lead singer of the Opera House, with the help of the mysterious, yet highly-seductive Phantom. ---------------------------------------------------------------- EXCERPT FROM THE PHANTOM DIARIES Dear Diary, Most of the night was spent dreaming of this Phantom. I would never admit it to anyone, but I believe I m enamored with this legendary figure. The strange goings-on at the Opera House are eerie, but I m always eager to go back. My name is Annette Binoche. I am 18 years old, straight out of school and the new seamstress assistant at the New York Metropolitan Opera House. I am lucky to find this job. But not in a million years can I imagine I would become the lead singer in the new opera and become drawn into a dangerous life-and-death plot of some crazed phantom whose wrath spanned centuries across two continents. The tragic incidence at the Paris Opera House where the Phantom had haunted has been over a hundred years ago. Yet, everyone claims this is the same phantom who now terrorize the New York Opera House. I would leave, but I love it here...New York, the Opera, this job, and then there is Eric, who seems a little older than me, but knows the music better than anyone. As my self-appointed vocal coach, he has brought out a side of me I never knew exists. There is something about Eric. He tells me he is not what he seems, a young cast member with intensely blue sapphire eyes and strong wide hands...hands that can be protective or hands that can kill. The problem is ...can I resist the phantom's passion, even if my life depends on it? --Excerpt. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.
