Jack and Alison have been left to run wild, trusted by their invalid mother to be good children. Instead they get themselves into one scrape after another, with the staff colluding to protect the mistress of the house from any knowledge of their doings. After one scrape too many, Cousin Evelyn arrives to look after them and to run the house. The children make a vow to drive Evelyn away, but Jack immediately falls under her sway, leaving Alison alone in her determination to see the vow through, especially after Jack is sent off to school. Miss Little arrives as governess and the love and affection Alison gives her contrasts starkly with the way she treats Evelyn. The vow causes many problems for everyone before Alison can see the beauty of her cousin.
