This cautionary tale reminds you to be careful what you hope for in retirement. The final book in The Ted Vallan Mysteries Trilogy finds newly retired Vermont State Police Major Crime Investigator Captain Ted Vallan suddenly in New York City. He has fled the Vermont hospital where he recently became head of security. With only the clothes on his back he shows up at his author son's apartment. What happened to make Ted believe he must remain on his own; a fugitive from the law? No longer a young man, how will he respond to the challenges of staying out? Heartbreaking, and dramatically complicating events, it appears his wife is responsible for his flight. With the power of unfortunate mistakes from the past piercing everyone involved like bullets, how is Ted's disgruntled former deputy working what happened in Vermont? Are there any secrets or answers in his son's 'fiction' novels about his family...and murder? Surprisingly, back in Vermont, newly badged NYPD Detective James Wiley may become Ted's best hope. For the first time in his brief career Detective Wiley finds his training and skills challenged as he tries to settle into a frustrating search for the truth.
