During the 1890s Phil Field loses his job on a fishing boat in Plymouth, Devon. He finds it difficult to get another job and drowns his sorrows in the pub. On his way home he is attacked and Enid Kelly finds him slumped on the ground in the freezing cold. They become good friends and when Phil joins the Royal Navy, they write to each other and see each other when Phil comes home on leave. Enid falls in love with Phil, but he considers her a good friend.

After a night of celebration Enid becomes pregnant and they marry. When World War I looms Enid is frightened. Will they and their children survive this terrible time?
