Caterpillars are the larvae of butterflies and moths. They represent only one of the four stages of a butterfly's metamorphosis (egg—larva—pupa—butterfly). Since their appearance in no way resembles adult butterflies which have wings, many people do not make the connection between the two, mistakenly thinking that they are completely different animals.
