It is 1941 in French-occupied India. World War II is enveloping the world but in small town Pondicherry, Mireille Beteille and her husband, Achille, are hosting their first and harvest festival of Pongal. As a lauded classical dancer, Mireille has choreographed a short dance with her students while her husband give away textiles from his new factory. But when their daughter falls ill, creating a spectacle on the stage, Mireille and her husband are at odds: over their priorities, their dreams, and their shared future in India. Her literary historical novel, Watermark: A Novel of the Middle Ages, traces the introduction of paper in southern France at a time when heresy was aflame.
