The Essex village of Stapleford Abbotts will always be synonymous with the brutal murder of their brave village policeman George William Bill Gutteridge. A community he embraced, took under his wing and worked in parallel with; protecting it with the selfless dedication and zeal he was famous for, until his brutal and needless death at the hands of Frederick Guy Browne and William Henry Kennedy on that still and misty morning of the 27th September 1927. This quiet community had been violently thrown onto the world stage deprived of one of their own, as Bill had become. They accepted him in their own ways knowing that as a former Norfolk working man he understood them. Turning back the pages of his life, there is much more to learn and understand about Bill Gutteridge including his young wife Rose who, in her brutal grief, hardship and unwavering dignity, selflessly dedicated the rest of her life to her children until being reunited with George in 1956.
