A Strange Occupation
A Personal Account of Life in the British Zone of Occupied Germany After the Second World War
Georgiana Melrose(0)
About
After her education at Malvern Girls College and Chelsea College of Physical Education, Georgiana Melrose embarked on a varied career, starting as a gymnastic and games mistress. Then, on her marriage, went to live in France where she and her husband, Tony Melrose - a writer and broadcaster - inaugurated English programs from Radio Lyons.
During the war she worked as a personnel manager in a large aircraft factory. When it was over she joined the Control Commission for Germany working in the branch controlling Hamburg Radio. Here she wrote the scripts for the English language programs aimed at schools and colleges to throw light on the British and American 'way of life'.
When controls were relinquished she remained in Hamburg at the request of the North German Radio to carry on the work, and stayed for a further twelve years.
A Strange Occupation is Georgiana's personal account of life in the British Zone of occupied Germany after the Second World War, set against the background of a country utterly devastated and undergoing the painful process of being reorganized by its conquerors.
Despite the confused and at times contradictory attitudes of the authorities, much was done by ordinary members of the Occupation Forces to help the German people back to normal civilized living.
This story does not dwell on the hardships but reveals the comic and often bizarre aspects of a unique period in our recent history.
A fascinating read for anyone interested in the post-war rebuildin...
